New OSB board now to paint it.

Color will be White But water base paint or oil ??

I'd go water based paint on both primer and top coat. It's inside...not exposed to outside elements so no sense using oil based. It will also be easier to clean things up afterwards.

BTW Doug, I liked your picture in the attached link /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif ...ahhh when was this, during your Mr. Universe days?? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Most painters are going to water based, because of easier cleanup and improved formulas. They now last (nearly) as long as oil and are pretty much easier to apply.

Regardless of which paint you use, make sure that you prime it with a good primer. Your first coat is the most important, as any recoating down the road will rely on the base coat. Make sure that you sand (perhaps - might not have to with OSB), but definately clean it with something like TSP. Surface prep is the absolutely most important part of painting.

Having said that, and having done painting professionally, I still think that oil provides a better finish - it certainly sets up faster, as latex (water based) will take up to a couple of weeks to cure hard.

But I'm painting pretty much the entire interior of my house and am using latex. My living room is 30x30 and if I'd tried to use oil I'd probably have shot myself /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif, especially when cleaning up.

Pretty strange to use OSB for a garage ceiling (or any interior finish surface) ... drywall is more or less fire retardant - some thicknesses are fire rated - but OSB ??? I hope that this garage doesn't have living quarters above it!!

The reason for using 4 x 8 sheets of osb was I got a real good buy on it ( $ 3.00 ) per sheet. If the garage burns I do not think it matters what type of board is used.
Thanks for the info using water base primmer
I am going to try using a 18 in wide roller to paint with and I can do it from the floor. The work never seems to end.
As for the picture This is what I looked like when I started the building Now I need a crutch /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Doug,

I put up some partition walls in my garage/basement and skinned them with OSB, mostly because it was cheap, but also in hopes that it would be more durable than drywall. It's a combination garage/basement, so it gets exposed to the weather when the doors are open. And I use it as a shop, so I occasionaly ram boards into the walls. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway, we painted them with interiod-grade latex (leftover from builder) and it has held up well. It took 2 coats, but it covered pretty well. That's been 2 years ago and there is no sign of problems yet. The ceiling was already finished with drywall (building code), so I ended up not touching it.

I don't think so. I used it in my garage & the ceiling also. I have seen it in other shops & I liked it. I still haven't gotten around to painting it yet, tho.</font>

I've seen a few places finished out in OSB and then stained. They looked kind of neat. Beer joints, mostly. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Well Ispent most of the day painting the ceiling.
It took 5 gal and one quart. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
I had to get in the car and go out after just one quart.
Painted with a roller and a long handle to get to the 10 foot ceiling with out too much climbing the ladder.

And I'll bet you paid quite a bit more for that last quart than for the previous ones /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif...

Sounds like you're almost done, but one thing that I finally tried was one of those Power Rollers. For what you're doing it probably wasn't too bad since you could reach the ceiling with an extension, but my ceilings are too high - have to use The Big Ladder. Anyway, I just hooked that sucker straight up to my 5 gallon bucket and painted away. Only had to come down to move the ladder.

And when it came time to paint the walls, that thing allowed me to absolutely fly. They claim you can put on something like a gallon a minute. I don't see how (and still do a decent job), but it is fast.

Well after 5 gal primer and 5 gal of paint the ceiling is done
Now if I could just find where I could buy a new back /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I looks ok and reflecks the light down ( using 100 watt light blubs ) Now for over head ceiling lights. it never ends

Now the wife wants me to put in a small kennel and use just some of the garage for storage. hmmm /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My wife's mom just came up for a visit. Had a great time, and she was kind enough to frame a couple of portraits that a friend had done. Just got the hallway painted (I need a new back, too - let me know if you find a good source /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif), and hung the pictures in there. Next thing you know, we're talking about changing the lighting from the spots that are in there now to track lighting to highlight the pictures.

Ah, it is a lot of work but does look nice when it is done. If it ever will be completed /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif...

Bummer.

Hope you feel well enough to put up a good fight with your "mean" wife and she lets you back in the garage soon. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

In the end, don't rush your recovery.

Doug,
By all means, do as the Doc and the bat wielding wife says and take it easy. I have had 2 heart attacks and thats the reason for owning my tractor now.......less hard labor.
Those lights will be there when you're ready
