Painting Garage Floor Pro/Cons How?

The fume issue is quite real. A number of years ago the television station at which I worked painted the studio floor with two part epoxy paint. Even with big doors open to the outside, the fumes caused MAJOR problems, and not just with a few sensitive individuals.

When I used to work at MCI we contracted to paint 2' strips on the floors in front of the equipment rows.

We had the exaugst fans running, doors open etc.. Yes that stuff has really really bad fumes.

I had good results with 2-part epoxy paint. Required a lot of prep work...power washed the concrete with detergent, acid etched, time to thoroughly dry, then 2 coats of paint. Rather toxic stuff, fumes and such. didn't even try to clean the brushes, etc. just tossed the whole lot out. I used a sealer instead of paint on a different garage floor, same acid prep, etc. Less toxic and also had good results. The heat from tires will lift the paint if it's not properly applied or of poor quality.

I had my pole barn floor coated this past spring. The company that did it usually does just industrial work. I chose the multi-coat epoxy with a top coat of polyurethane. Last coat contained glass micro-spheres to give slip resistance. First thing they did was steel shot blast the surface. It looked like 80 grit sandpaper when they were done. This did two things...removed natural and man made (as in me) surface contaminants and gave a better mechanical bond surface...according to them. I'm real happy with it. I had a hard time sinking the bucks into it (so soon after construction) but I could see that I was just adding to the surface crud as time moved on. Decided to get it done before it was really a mess. Cleans up really nice now with just a hose or occassional mop.

Maybe someone can help me here. In an earlier post I let my concerns known of the floor getting very slippery after painting or sealing. I have a cabin and the floor in the garage was sealed. Problem is the floor is literally dangerous. And when wet it is an ice rink. I want to sand the floor down hoping to get the sealer off but was told that won't work at all. Does any one know of something I could spray or paint over the top of this sealer?

for what it's worth, when my front porch was painted, the painter added a little bit of sand to the glossy deck paint to make the surface less slippery. works quite well.

I would call the Mfg. and see what they can recommend.

bellweather,

I have heard of that and mentioned it to a guy that paints for a living. He told me that is fine except for my garage has already been sealed and any thing I put over the sealer will more than likely just bubble up. But I am willing to try anything at this time. I have had to many kids go running into that garage to get some water toy and go sliding on their A**. Someday someone is going to hit their head. I keep all doors closed to at least slow them down some.

Yea, for 2600 you could carpet it or vinyl it. Something to think about.
