Just to make things look a little nicer.... Any problems with just blasting the old implements with some Killz spray paint?

Ken,
we've always just wire wheeled the rust w/angle grinder and brushed w/rustoleom or similar low cost paint. As far as kilz all I have ever seen is interior stain block

Do an archive search for POR15, a "paint-over-rust" paint that many swear by. I havent used it, but I'm going to check it out.

Por15 works very nice. Just a little on the expensive side. I want to do this real cheap. I have used it on my 4x4 stuff. Fades in the sunlight though.

You can do it cheap, and cheap is what you will get.

I would consider doing nothing, until you find out if you want to keep the 9N. The reason being, if you throw a cheap paint job at it, and then want to sell it, the buyer who might want to restore it will (may) look negatively at having to also remove the cheap paint. Or he will wonder what it is that you are trying to cover up. I would rather buy something that doesn't have a "pretty" cover-up, kind of like make-up on a woman. Have to guess at what lies beneath. But that is another subject. (Maybe itsmecindi will get a story out of it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

If you decide this is the tractor you want to live with for awhile, and you would rather have the cheap paint, then go for it. It is yours to do with what you want. I found out with an older Deere (420) that once I removed the oil and grease, the John Deere paint covered quite well (a bit of wire brushing on some non-painted rust spots helped). Albeit that was when lead paint could be purchased, and it can't be beat.

But there are good paints to put on and really not that expensive compared to the hours invested preparing the tractor and putting on the paint (IMO).

POR has new formulas that have UV protectors.

Pretty sure I would NOT use Kilz over rust. It may work, but I've never heard it advertised as rust-preventative. I swear by Rustoleums Rusty-Metal Primer and then any of their top coats. Also, their Aluminum paint works quite well without ever top-coating.

All I wanted to paint was the old implements. Tractor looks real nice as it is. No reason for paint there.

You may do what you want, but I'd go for a Rustolium or something that actually works. The Kilz is the wrong paint for the wrong job, and would seem pointless to me. Why waste the time, rusty looks better than a yuky faded peeling paint job.

This is just my opinion, it's not an issue with me. You asked, so this is how I feel. Best of luck with it, whatever you do. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I have many new implimints.. but I also have a couple used / throw-aways... I picked up a decent 5' box blad on the roadside for 100 bucks.. and a 6' oldoldold ford disc for free.. just to get it out o fhte pasture.

On both, i just knocked the rust off with a wire brush and hit it with a good double coat of kmart red paint.... 1.29 a can.. took 6 cans to do the disc.

The thing is a monster.. but I disc'ed 10 ac with it last year.

All I was aiming to do was to prevent further deteriation.

Later this year when I'm done refurbing my NAA, I've got a dearborn 2 bottom plow i'm going to refurb as well.

This will get the same tratment as the tractor... sand down to bare metal, replace all bolts nuts bushings, prime, then paint with good 'farm / agricultural' grade enamil pain.

I painted my 8n with paint from TSC.. has held up well and looks nice.

The disc... well.. it is bright red.. but I chose that color on purpose.. as I had to disc before i had a trailer.. and had to road the tractor a couple miles to the pasture a couple times.. and didn't want anybody to run into me... believe me.. people see a big bright red disc very easilly.!
