Painting prep for a Concrete Garage floor

I am talking about sealant, Gives the concrete a glossy look, used on most garage floors in this area. They mostly use silicate compounds,Which actually penetrate the concrete.

If thats the case then adhesion may well become a problem. I don't know how deep the sealer penetrates, as you say it may not be worth the time and $$ to take a chance. Theres nothing worse than having floor paint start coming off. I think if it were me and there was a doubt I'd probably just leave it alone.

I like the painted concrete...
I guess you have thought though how slick it makes things.

If you spit on the floor,,, your liable to slip and fall. (if you step in it)

That said I still prefer mine painted.

One of my shops had never been treated and was pretty old concrete... I will admit it would most likely have been better to treat it with something else first but I just swept, double mopped with lysol... Dry,,,, paint with Wal-Mart porch and floor oil based paint... Wal-mart doesn't sell anything oil based anymore ( couple years )...

Anyway it has held up pretty well.... I do drive into that shop regularly do a little touching up on it..

Using the battle ship grey kinda sorta matches the concrete so small spots of missing/scratched paint really do not show.

I like it kinda slick from the paint I can use a dust mop type broom and clean up much faster and with less dust that using a regular shop broom.

If you happen to have any oil spots it makes spotting them much easier - and of course clean up is easy.

I think the fact that the concrete was old and fairly rough - probably helped the paint adhere better....

I'm thinking I will paint the floor at my barn at the house I moved to last year..... keep us posted on your luck - maybe we can all learn...

What I'd really like to try is one of the 'poor on' resurfacing products... You basically add a floor on top of your floor with this poor on type stuff... self levelling and glassy smooth finish. I've never seen it in person but I think it is supposed to be fairly durable..

mine wasnt previously sealed, I think the muratic acid will remove your sealant. The sealant your talking about is probably just a curing compound the finisher used to slow the curing process. I doubt that is going to lift anyway. I bought the Dupont product from a Columbia paint outlet, I live in the Bismarck ND area and I called the store recently to ask what the recommend for concrete floors and that is what he recommended. I think Dupont does a poor job of explaining what their products are for on the web compared to Columbia. Enough of the babble. I would try it anyway, the armorpoxy looks like a good product as well. I know other people in my area that have used the rustoleum brand bought at Menards http://www.rustoleum.com/Project.asp?frm_project_id=30&ddp=30&SBL=1 and are happy. Bottom line, prepping is the most important step. The best part of having the floor painted is not just how good it looks but how much easier it is to clean. What do you have to loose?

Here's another product we used on a floor and it seems to be holding up pretty good. This floor gets some chemical abuse but after two years it's holding up. I'm not sure if it is available to the general public though...we hired a factory authorized contractor. It does have a non-slip texture.

I've worked in the concrete floor restoration business for the last four years and can tell you truthfully and honestly the only way to properly prep concrete for painting is to shot blast or bead blast. It's specified by most coating manufactors. The money spent up front doing this will ensure the best possible adhesion. I wouldn't recommend anything else for removing sealer. I will add, are you sure its really a sealer or a curing agent as mentioned in previous post. Curing agents are added to slow the cure rate of the concrete. The slower the rate the harder the concrete. Take a cup of water and pour it in a 1 or 2 sqft area on the concrete. If the water percolates with bubbles and soaks into the concrete, its probably not sealed. If it stays there and beads like water on a waxed car hood it has a lot of sealer on it. Also I found if the concrete has a hard troweled surface, by that I mean a really smooth finish, you will need to shot blast anyway to achieve the proper profile. You may already know all this but I just wanted to give you some of my experiences, some of which were gained the hard and expensive way. I friend of mine always says "experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted"! Good luck with your project.

I agree wholeheartedly that experience is the best qualifications there is.

That's the reason I ask about things on here is to get insight from those that have already been there,done that.
