Thanks for the concern. I'm well aware of the danger, but am not concerned at all with our "soil" type.
What you can't see in the picture is that the vertical sides of the excavation are almost entirely rocks from baseball size to beachball size with decomposed granite in between.
An vertical wall in an excavation in this material can stand for years. In fact, it takes a lot of gouging with the mini-hoe to disturb it.
