My original theory on the pallets was some sort of snowmobile protection or deterrent. In my area I've seen snowmobilers tear through fields indiscriminately at the first sign of snow, and they can do some damage.

The dropping of pallets periodically as they are emptied made alot of sense too. That theory may have the highest probability of all the theories mentioned so far.

If he is still with us, Sparc should look to see if either his county or township offers property records through their websites. Both my township and county offer free property records searches online. They contain the owners name and address, lot dimensions, legal descriptions, building and tax info. etc... It could be enough info to track down an actual human to ask.
