I have kept out of this until now, despite the phenomena spreading to Portugal soon after the thread began. I can resist no longer, and decided to post proof from Google maps.
The pallets do not appear because the photos were taken in July 2014. I swear there are some just as the OP said (I passed them this morning, about 6miles from here on the way into Castelo Branco) and they are in the small area shown in the link. They are much closer together than the way the OP described the US ones - perhaps Portuguese pallets are more accustomed to living closer together. I hope Google takes some more street views soon so that I can prove it.

Edit: I apologise to anyone who had something special lined up for post #2500. I did not realise that I was making it until the post came up on screen.
