Pallets in fields

I just had to check in on this thread, I hadn't looked at it since about page 2 and was wondering what was still being discussed.
Well, that's 5 minutes I'll never get back.

You must read slow. ;)

Just reading the last 4 posts was enough for me. Who knew?

Pallets!
I once bought a pile of pallets that had contained luan plywood.
Now luan is in the mahogany family and many boards were just that, mahogany!
1/2 were 8 ft long and the rest 4 ft.
I made a ranch style fence with the 8 footers and some built in cabinets and desk with the nicer grained lengths.
The lumber yard had planned to burn them so did not refuse my $25, offer.
There was enough to fill my 4 x 8 trailer stacked about 2 ft high.
Guess that made me one of the early 'pallet recyclers' that is all the current rage.
Repairing damaged pallets used to be a cottage industry around here. One summer when I was an unemployed teenager, a pallet fixer down the road had a pile that he said were beyond repair and gave my grandfather a hay trailer load. The best ones were white and red oak. Getting them apart was my first experience with hardened spiral nails and took some time. I chipped the jaw on a nice nail puller on one of those nails. When I see the price of red oat at Lowes today I wish I had some more pallets.

Locally many years ago a fellow DIY built his cottage.
He decked his roof using free pallets but certainly was no engineer.
He did not overlap the joints so they all aligned on the same truss.
Well come winter the snow load overcame the holding power of the (probably very few) nails and his cottage simply split in half and collapsed.

Just about every single day there is a new post on my local craigslist for free pallets. Lot of free, nearly new oak ones out there. You need some?

Last week I needed one for one of those things where only hardwood will do. I'll check Craigs List so I can get a few to keep on hand.
THANKS!

I have found a number of local smallish businesses that throw out pallets. Whenever I have asked about them, they are happy to get rid of some.

On pallets,
Recently I have noticed that lots of them are decked with fine multilayered plywood.
Great material for many projects. Fortunately I have a source to collect as many as I want.
Trick however is to separate the riser blocks from the decking.
Sawsall to the rescue!

Dismembering pallets. Premeditated and willful in the first degree
