I just got my hands on a B7300 that has been parked for about 3 yrs. Someone just changed all of the fluids (except fuel) before they thought they were going to use it. It is really hard to start, which I figure is the glow plugs (light doesn't come on) and when it is finally running, at high rpms (3000), it bogs down and tries to die as soon as the transmission is engaged (forward or reverse). As if this isn't enough, most of the time it doesn't want to idle back down when the throttle lever is backed off. Could this just be a problem with the governor sticking?

Wesley…
I trust you have fresh fuel in it. Also fresh fuel filter.
You may want to run a lot of diesel conditioner/injector cleaner.
Your problems may be in the injectors, or the injector pumps. Or both.
Glow plugs are easy enough to check, are they getting voltage?
Good luck and welcome to TBN… post back with your findings. KennyV.

Was is stored with the clutch hold down engaged? If not, the clutch may be stuck.

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure about the fuel. I will drain it and replace it and add some injector cleaner, as soon as I can get it home. Hopefully today...

No, I'm sure the clutch hold down wasn't engaged. It was my grandfather's tractor and he didn't let anyone mess with it, unless I was discing his garden for him. Anyway, you may be on to something. I was messing with it yesterday and with the throttle in the full open position, it would run right at 3000 rpms, but when I pushed in the clutch it would gain about another 2000 rpms and then go back down to 3000 rpms when I released the clutch. If the clutch is stuck, how can I unstick it?

If it is gaining RPM when you push the clutch in it does not sound like it is stuck. It sounds like something on the transmission side of the clutch is taking a lot of power. I'm no expert on these things. It may have more than one problem. I'm not familiar with the 7300 but if it is an HST a hydraulic valve might be stuck.

Ok, if we go ahead and suppose that some kind of hydraulic valve is stuck, does it seem likely that trying to go ahead and work it, my "unstick" said valve? The only thing that seems to drag it down (aside from steeping on the forward or reverse pedal) is raising, or lowering the 3 point hitch, with an implement on it, and that isn't nearly as much of a drag as trying to make it move.

Kenny,
I checked today and the guy did drain all of the fuel and replaced it when he replaced the fuel filter. I'm still going to go ahead add a bottle of injector cleaner to it, especially since I know it has never been done before. Can't hurt, right?

I sounds like either the hydraulics are overloading the engine or the engine is not making power. If you have a mower try engaging the PTO. If that tries to kill the engine I'd say look at injector pump or injectors. Since you mentioned that the engine does not want to idle down it might be something sticky in the injector pump.

I guess it's looking more and more like a bottle of injector cleaner may be the most likely remedy. This is an HSD with only 70 hrs on it, but since it has been sitting so long, is it very likely that some of the seals in the fuel system may have dried out or dry rotted and is letting air in?
