Parking Brake Won't Stay Set

Hey guys, if you have had trouble since the machines were new, why didnt you have the dealer fix it. It is probably to late now, but that would have been the first thing i would have done, when it is under warranty.....

why didnt you have the dealer fix it.

Very good question. I can't speak for others but I purchased my 6284 with 12 hours on it. The tractor came through an inventory liquidation sale - many of these tractors were stuck in dealer inventories when they closed and Cub Cadet discontinued the model. The stranded tractors were on manufacturer floorplans and they liquidated them with no warranties.

The result is that I got a great price on the tractor but have had to deal with some issues such as the parking brake. I'm not complaining. The smaller things I've encountered are nothing more than I would have found in a used tractor that would have cost more than I paid for mine. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase but need to figure out how to fix the brake.

Fixed it!

While performing maintenance today I looked closely at the parking brake mechanism and fixed it to work properly. It turns out that the rods that extend from the rockshaft connected to the pedal to the brake arm on both sides are adjusted so short that the cam that is engaged by the locking pawl does not move far enough to allow the lock to engage. I removed the spring clips that hold the threaded rod ends on both rods and screwed them both off five turns to lengthen the rods. This extended length provides enough movement of the cam that the locking pawl can engage properly and hold.

It appears that the rods may have been installed as short as they were in order to try use the springs on the end of the rods at the rear to push the pedal back up. Now my pedal stays down until I reach down and pull it back by hand. I have not been able to identify that there is a missing return spring on the brake linkage but I plan to install one. That should allow the pedal to return when released.

It is not necessary to remove the center floor cover to perform the adjustment mentioned above but it allows better light from above to work with.

It is nice to have the parking brake function properly once and for all!
