I don't think I've met anyone who's said that they regretted deleting their emissions on their trucks.

Because when they decided to do it, they also decided they don't give a rat's rear-end about the pollution it causes. There is no question that it simplifies the engine and increases power.

One thing which really pi$$es me off is when some bozo in his "tuned" diesel pickup goes by me spewing such a cloud of black smoke that I practically need to pull over because I can't see.

You do realize most of them are doing that intentionally, don't you? They add a switch which dumps extra fuel into the system to make the black cloud. There's a dumb-***** around here who loves to do that to me when I'm driving my tractor down the road. Apparently, he's pissed that it took him an extra 15 seconds to drive slow behind me until an opening appeared in oncoming traffic and he could pass. What does he expect? This is a rural area. You WILL get caught behind a slow-moving vehicle from time to time.

Interesting thing how the emissions systems work.

A properly tuned diesel shouldn’t produce any soot except when the max hp has been exceeded.

The main issue is oxides of nitrogen which produce ground level ozone in congested areas. In other areas it just dissipates.

To get rid of the NOx they added the EGR, but the EGR caused soot. To get rid of that soot, they added the DPF. But the DPF clogs, so they have to regen. The regen dumps out a ton of pollutants, to they added DEF/SCR and lowered the EGR. In they end you have an unreliable engine that burns more fuel and contributes more to green house gasses.

Instead, they could have just mandated electric vehicles in congested areas and left the diesels alone and we would have been better off. And the cycle goes on and on.

On a side note, a cetane boost additive will reduce the soot production and the number of regens.

Maybe we just need the sun to send us another Carrington type event to fry everything computer related then just maybe we modern humans would be more dang thankful of the fact that Carbon drives our modern times and is the only way for us and life to thrive on this planet.
To me it seems the EPA is a mechanism to drive modern man into the ground by trying to deprive him/her of the advantages that Carbon brings to our lives.
It is one thing to constantly strive for more efficiency in engine design and no doubt we have come a long way but all this BS garbage they have attached to modern engines has driven us 10 steps backwards with no hope of ever making them steps back.
More focus Should have been devoted to increasing fuel efficiency per mile or hr....which equates to more work done with less cost.
Cities and related smog will never go away when the car is the number one means of transportation....and not sure if there ever will be a answer to that.
But consider we humans live much longer lives today than 200 yrs ago all because of what Carbon has allowed us to do....so what we die at 80 instead of 50 be thankful of a likely extra 30yrs of life...

Life is a compromise....I just think the EPA has stepped way to far over the line and too many people are complacent in just going along with this crap instead of questioning WHY and to what benefit.....I mean what does all the extra crap add to the overall carbon foot print...more steel more parts more more more more...really is that a step forward in the big picture life cycle of a engine....

My Mahindra has EGR and catalyst but no DPF.

VW found a way around that.... ;-O

VW’s had nothing to do with the DPF they all had working DPF’S it was the NOX gases that it was not breaking down.
