I realize that this may not be related to tractors but I am hoping the wealth of information on this site might be able to help me. ...I want to replace the parts of my couple on a used utility trailer I purchased some time ago. Right now I have the screw down type but would like to switch over to the latching type. My confusion come when looking on-line I see different manufactures of couplers...Fulton, Shelby, etc. I am not sure what I have so I don't know what to order...is this important or will any repair kit that fits a 2" ball work??? Please help..no body in town seem to be able to help..they just want around $100 to install a new coupler..the repair parts are less then $20....

You would probably have to replace the whole assembly, but they do have parts kits on page F5. If for some reason they won't sell to you, this place will usatrailer but don't be surprised when the box has a redneck label on it!

I know the Tractor Supply Company has all kinds of coupler parts and pieces. I have purchased coupler kits from the local auto parts supply store also, NAPA should have something I would think.

One of the things you have to know is the size and shape of the metal tubing a new coupler will attach to. Most of the couplers I have seen fit square steel tubing well.

I've seen them in the Northern Tools catalog too. Screw type vs. latch type is a preference thing. I've used both since the early 80's. I prefer the screw type. Granted, the latches are slightly faster. But with the screw type you can feel and adjust the tension, as I'm sure you know. I'm generally on 2" balls, but they do vary some for fit to my coupler. Don't need to keep track of a safety pin or bolt and nut either. Most do prefer the latch though.

Somewhat off topic....I've seen only the latch type come unhooked (seen that on a few ocassions) with just one occurance on the screw type, which was pretty embarrising and scary. My truck was parked on the launch ramp and I launched the boat and trailer as a unit /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif All was fine in the end, except the heals on my flip flops getting seriously shaved down stopping the trailer. The 1,200 lb. trailer drug me till the 3,600 lb. boat floated free. I had only moved the boat about 50' after hookup by some friends who both own trailers. I learned something that young day:
1. Always use the safety chains, even super short trips.
2. Hook your own. Each setup is slightly different and the owner knows it best.

I can laugh about that now /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif 20 odd years later.....
