I was talking to a Yanmar dealer today that said he got a letter from Yanmar stating that they were no longer going to supply grey market parts. He didn't seem to like to deal in them anyway. Was he pulling my leg to discourage me from buying parts from him or is this true? He said when he ordered parts from now on he had to include the serial number of the tractor. Have any of you other dealers heard this?

It is hard for me to believe that Yanmar would cut their own throat by screwing up the gray market. What would the Japanese do if their used farm equipment had no value? We know that Len Shaeffer goes out of his way for parts business so if all else fails you might try him. I think there are several other Dealers who want the parts business. If the local guy is going to abandon the business you will have to fall back on mail order.

I definitely wasn't going to give up without trying all the dealers I know of. I was just trying to get to the truth about what I was told. I would still use these tractors whether I could get parts or not. They are just about inexpensive enough to be disposable if anything major goes wrong.

When ordering parts now we dealers do have to include model and serial numbers.

Perhaps it is some sort of research / tracking.... Seeing what parts are being ordered for what machines.. then they know which ones are still out there running, and where there machines are... the unfortunate side effect of this is 'planned obselesence'.. if the jap engineers find that they built their machines that can run for 20-30 years.. the bean counters may want the machines engineered to have a shorter servicable lifespan.. then again.. it could just be a non related policy change.. but I smell something...
