Patch or Plug???

Over time plugs tend to work their way out and patches can come loose as the tire flexes and start to leak. A patch plug will last a lot longer, especially if you take the time to properly rough up the hole and the inside of the tire before you glue it on. Nothing is totally failproof, but throwing away a tire with lots of tred left on it sucks. Patch plugs are pretty reliable.

Hey I like the patch plugs. Don't they come in different sizes? Where is a good source?
We repaired a gash in a rear tractor tire with a big boot. When we aired it up the casing
had a large split prob 1.5" x 4". I mixed up some JB Weld and filled in the gap. No problems
and still there after about 10 years.

I have heard that radial tires are not supposed to be plugged. I wouldn't trust a plug on a highway vehicle anyway.

They now use patch/plugs I guess. A combination of the two and supposedly the best... I don't know. On a tractor I would be okay with any of the 3 depending on how big the hole is- patch, plug, boot. I am not concerned with a high-speed blowout at my 12 mph top speed.

Steel belted tires need to have a plug. Otherwise the wires inside the tire will suffer from corrosion and cause the tire to fail. It's one of the reason why the patch/ plugs are used.

Ran over a busted off steel t post when I was a kid plowing snow. Tire guy at DinnerBell Foods who took care of the semi's and straight trucks told me where to take it and tell them I wanted a boot. Glad I did as tire lasted on the rear of tractor for another 20 years.
