I also worked at Sears when I was in college and it was a very nice place to work. The Manager was the Chairman of the local Christian Business men's association and it showed in his leadership.

These views are just my very humble opinion.

Sam :)

Sam, that's all you needed to say. The other stuff will take this thread on a tangent and doesn't help promote a positive thread about a classic American icon. Sears has been a staple for products and employment in this country for as long as I can remember. My first visit to Santa Claus was in a Sears & Roebuck store when I was just a toddler in the early 50s. Heck! I probably learned to read as much from lookin' at the Sears catalogs as I did from my school books.

I like to shop at my local Sears Hardwear, its been a longtime since i have been in a Sears Dept store i will have to stop by and leave some money now:).

I do think that craftsman products have gone down hill big time in the last 10 years:(

You might find that when you actually go to the store, the design and quality of craftsman stuff has gone up in the last 10 years. Now back in the late 70's/80's I thought craftsman power tools were junk. I had a few of them that really had serious flaws. I also liked the smooth finish of other wrenches over the rough castings of craftsman. I stopped buying their stuff back then.

But now they have nicely finished handtools, very nice pneumatic tools. The designs and build quality on their power tools seem to have greatly improved. They also carry many other brands now. It is worth checking in them again. I purchased their pneumatic cut-off saw a while back and it is right up there with my IR stuff. I really like it.

I am also a fan of their twisted wrenches. Check em out.

On the Wal-Mart shopping, remember you as a consumer choose to shop there or -not-.

Simple as that.

Im sorry but with first hand experience of Wal Mart policys I disagree I do not consider 'good haelth' care from them First off, the premioum is many times more than the employee an afford ..period. let alone the deductables.
And sick time? well you have to take multiply days off to even make use of them.
wal Mart is a prime example really of a work place needing a Union.People bash unions but its the only defence to heartless companys.
We have a few small business her who care aboutt he employees and they show that to them..
A wal-mart worker or home depot or lowes etc. Isnt gong to be telling anyone they arent happy with their work place. They know better.
The main problem is managers with no power and fear of their own jobs. With this they cant manage people at all.

By the way, "Target" stores, a French company, NEVER contributes ANYTHING to Veteran's groups.
I'm not sure where you're getting your facts. Target is publicly-traded on the NYSE under the ticker symbol TGT, and headquartered in Minneapolis (which I'm pretty sure is in the United States).

The "French-owned" meme is a popular myth on the internet, probably stemming from the tongue-in-cheek pronunciation of the store's name as "Tar-zhay."

As to contributions to veterans' causes, I don't know one way or another, but Target is widely hailed as one of the most generous companies in America; in 2005, Forbes ranked it as the the highest cash-giving company as a percentage of income in the country. It also has one of the best forensics labs in the country, and offers pro-bono services to law enforcement all over America, from small departments all the way up to the FBI, Secret Service, BATF (spit!), and others.

I'm not sure where you're getting your facts, but you really need to check them.

I think they are doing a great thing. I love going there and I will make it a point to shop there when I can.

I am a Sears tool shopper...I might have to buy something I don't need next time..

Good job Sears:thumbsup:

thanks for the heads up on Sears. I used to buy a lot of tools from them, such as radial arm saw, joiner, routers, etc, never had any major problems from them. My only grip with them is they mark their regular prices up so that they can have a "sale" which is the normal price found anywhere else. However, when I built my house I bought all my appliances from sears in one trip, and 13 yrs later they are all still working great.
I know from my neighbor it's tough getting called up as a reserve and coming home without a job.

Of course, I don't know, or care, what your "first hand experience" is or was. And I don't have documentation to the contrary, but I know a couple of older Walmart employees who say the primary reason they keep working there is because of the great health care insurance (Blue Cross/Blue Shield). One of them recently spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital and told me what astronomical bills he saw, how little he had to pay, and also what premiums he's paying (a darned sight less than I pay for Medicare and medicare supplement).

I know Walmart one of the greeters has told me what a great place it is to work; decent salary for what he does and great health insurance.

Now, Bird, you know we can't use "health" and "insurance" in the same thread, or bad things might follow...

It's funny that on this site we try to steer people away from "Grey market" cheap junk because we know how important "Quality" is---but when it comes to Walmart, people tow the company line and follow in lockstep to the beat of their drum. "Walmart-Walmart-Walmart!!!"

Not only do they have a monopoly in the market place but they have a psychological monopoly on the minds of "Flea market" (sorry, I'm not Politically correct) type shoppers that view WM as the Holy Grail.

A recent comment by one of my "relatives," went something like this: "Ifin Walmarts don't has id, Is done need it."

Yes. Its amazing they even let us "flea market" types vote. Some of us are silly enough to believe that competition is everything in the marketplace. The best competitor wins...generally by providing what people want, at good prices, and by being good enough to its employees that they actually keep showing up for work. Of course, those employees probably aren't any smarter than the rest of us, are they?

By the way, "Target" stores, a French company, NEVER contributes ANYTHING to Veteran's groups.

Nope. Never have, never will. Well, unless you count what the Veterans of Foreign Wars posts on their website...

"...Target contributes more than $2 million dollars weekly to charitable causes, and is one of the corporate sponsors for the tour of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund's "The Wall That Heals"...a traveling Vietnam Memorial..."

Or unless you count the statements of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), which is a Department of Defense organization...

"Target Corporation has been recognized as an "Outstanding Employer" which has gone above and beyond..in support of National Guard and Reserve employees".

I guess the way I see it is I KNOW people who work there. They like their jobs. Google isn't going to change what I know first hand.

As far as "flea market" mentality? Well, I take that comment to be just a flame. You obviously don't like walmart so you will say anything to anger walmart shoppers. Walmarts goods are new and are lower cost. Lower quality comes with that. Some people don't make a lot of money and are able to have a higher quality of life by shopping at walmart. I can shop anywhere, but see no reason to spend more money on some items. A lot of stuff you can buy at walmart is no different than anywhere else. Some of it is junk. The buyer gets to choose what they want to spend their money on.

Also, Walmart can't have a monopoly if there are other stores that you can shop. Walmart's competitiveness may be brutal, but they aren't the only store out there.

rjkobberman, quit making sense. Nobody wants to hear that. ;)

Okay, I stand corrected about Target. I have been sent LOTS of things on email that looked official that stated that Target was French owned and very anti U.S. Military. Knowing France, I believed it.

I'm a Veteran and my Dad was a veteran and was shot and stabbed in France when He parachuted into Cherbourge, with the 101st Screaming Eagles.

I don't retract a thing I said about Walmart and please don't act like Walmart is so great to employees because you know a greeter---big deal. My sister-in-law worked for them in California for 15 years and my Neice worked for them for 7 years and in fact, married the Walmart store manager in Cedar City, Utah, that had been there forever.

I have heard horror stories for years abot WM. I work about 1/4 mile away from a super walmart, so I talk to lots of their current and past employees. They still suck.

If being the largest retailer in the world with the most employees of any retailer, making the most profit doesn't qualify as a monopolistic enterprize, I don't know what does.

I also stick by the "flea market" mentality statement. Most of their customers sound like young birds: Cheap-cheap-cheap!

/ PATRIOTIC SEARS #32
It's still about choice Porkie. People have it, either in shopping there or being employed there.

No offense, but being large and being profitable doesn't make Walmart a monopoly. Walmart faces competition from grocery stores, drugstores, department stores, etc.

It seems condescending to me to refer to their customers in that fashion. They are making their choices based on their preferences and incomes.

I guess if I owned a Radio Shack franchise, I' be jealous of Walmart, too. If they were all that bad, wonder why your relatives worked there so long. As I've said, there are lots of things I don't like about Walmart, but exaggerating their faults doesn't accomplish anything. There are lots of things I don't like about some other companies, too, but that doesn't mean those companies are all bad. And of course any company that gets large and successful can expect some people to try their best to bring them down.

Was gonna try my first harbor freight store this trip down south (need a 3/4" socket set) but might have to spend the extra $$ and give it to sears.

I guess it's just to bad that WM doesn't sell the latest chongwongshebarudingdong chinese tractor line or a LOT of you would just go ga-ga and rush to that classy shopping place, Walmart and just put it on your DEBIT CARD !!!!!

This isn't about jealousy BIRDMAN but what I perceive as right and wrong in the work place, having talked to a few more of their employees, besides ol' Cleetus, the night greeter.

Anyway, I do like Sears.

Bird, remind me never to play poker with you. You have a gift for seeing right through BS.

In my limited experience, 99 times out of 100 I see the anti-WM talk is REALLY about bringing something down that is not union...

This started out as just a little fun and humor. All of us have heard and read the jokes about the "WM mentality" of the trailer park crowd type shopper. (Oh my Martha, there he goes again!)

What WM has done to small towns is legendary, as it's predatory marketing policies have ruined local economies wherever they plant another store. Some more enlightened citizens and their representatives have been successful in keeping WM out of their areas. Many small towns have been gutted and shuttered when WM moves in. It's not BS, it's a fact.

Now hurry on down to your holy of holies, cause they is runnin' outa yer tatter tot-sausage and gravy special for 29 cents! (illegal alien farm workers only--all others pay 39 cents. Your debit card accepted. Just make sure you deposit enough to cover the 29 to 39 cents!)

HUMOR---get it ???????

Sorry, Sam. I don't get it, and here's why.

First, the tone of your previous posting doesn't convey humor. You come across as dead serious. Granted, tone can be difficult to convey with the written word, so I'll give you a pass on that one.

Second, you are obviously very contemptuous of your fellow man. Apparently, you find fault in those that aren't smart enough to shop at places you approve of. And while it is perfectly acceptable for you to quote your "sources" working for Wal-Mart, you dismiss the same source from other posters. I could be wrong, however, not being one of your "enlightened citizens".

Finally, much of your "humor" is based on unsubstantiated claims and "official looking" emails. (FYI, please don't send any money to someone from Nigeria that sends you an "official looking" email).

And did you say "tater tots"?!? Mmmm, tater tots. Now where's my debit card...
