If I were the Devil . . . I mean, if I were the Prince of Darkness, I would of course, want to engulf the whole earth in darkness. I would have a third of its real estate and four-fifths of its population, but I would not be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree, so I should set about however necessary to take over the United States. I would begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: do as you please. do as you please. To the young, I would whisper, the Bible is a myth. I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what is bad is good, and what is good is square? In the ears of the young marrieds, I would whisper that work is debasing, that cocktail parties are good for you. I would caution them not to be extreme in religion, in patriotism, in moral conduct. And the old, I would teach to pray. I would teach them to say after me: our Father, which art in Washington . . .

If I were the devil, I'd educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting so that anything else would appear dull an uninteresting. I'd threaten T.V. with dirtier movies and vice versa. And then, if I were the devil, I'd get organized. I'd infiltrate unions and urge more loafing and less work, because idle hands usually work for me. I'd peddle narcotics to whom I could. I'd sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. And I'd tranquilize the rest with pills. If I were the devil, I would encourage schools to refine young intellects but neglect to discipline emotions . . . let those run wild. I would designate an atheist to front for me before the highest courts in the land and I would get preachers to say "she's right". With flattery and promises of power, I could get the courts to rule what I construe as against God and in favor of pornography, and thus, I would evict God from the courthouse, and then from the school house, and then from the houses of Congress and then, in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and I would deify science because that way men would become smart enough to create super weapons but not wise enough to control them.

If I were Satan, I'd make the symbol of Easter an egg, and the symbol of Christmas, a bottle. If I were the devil, I would take from those who have and I would give to those who wanted, until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious. And then, my police state would force everybody back to work. Then, I could separate families, putting children in uniform, women in coal mines, and objectors in slave camps. In other words, if I were Satan, I'd just keep on doing what he's doing.

Paul Harvey, Good Day.

That was in 1965:

Here it is in the original broadcast:

I heard this the other day on Glenn Beck.

I used to listen to Paul Harvey daily as a young man, there will never be another like him

I used to listen to him on lunch break at work. Got so I could either stomach Harvey or my lunch. Easy to choose lunch. His folksy opinions were mostly rubbish and this one is no different.

Good post, Aggie...always did like Paul Harvey...

Mr Harvey had a way of finding out something interesting no one else found. Didn't his son take over the broadcast?

Great post! I always enjoyed his broadcasts.

The guy was no more than a folksy hustler. He sold a lot of overpriced trash to gullible people. His sthick was basically using his "news" to sell whatever he was being paid to peddle that day. BS vitamim suplements? Or how about "Eden Pure Heaters" . A $200 heater that put out no more heat than a $20 one from wallmart? His broadcasts were nothing more than a long commercial. He preyed on the weak minded.

Please explain who the "weak minded" are and how they are so. And if you believe me as a conservative to be one, I am open to debate.

I grew up hearing Paul Harvey when I was sick and missed school (always associated him with the chicken soup I had to eat) or during the summer. He didn't do as much advertising in the 50s and 60s as he began to do later. But that's true of all TV and radio programming. Some cable/satellite programming today is more than 35 percent ads.

As for Harvey being a sales guy, he did sell, but critics admitted routinely that he did believe in what he sold, and usually used it. Anyway, I am aware of only a few celebrities today - liberal or conservative - who don't hawk something.

Harvey's broadcasts were aimed primarily at rural listeners, a lot of them farmers. He talked about things that interested them, and they were conservative. The decades his program ran was proof that he knew his audience and they liked him. I always enjoyed his daily bit about some very unusual crime - like the Mississippi teens that swiped a highway bridge. They did an incredible amount of work and actually put out warning cones to keep anyone from wrecking. Great story.

Politically he was conservative, and made no bones about it. But he was a lot less nasty in his comments about those with whom he disagreed than the fanatics on both sides who darken radio and TV today.

I enjoyed his program, agree with him or not.

Agreed.

I think maybe 300's wife must have been lusting Paul from the sound of 300's post

LMAO another Pure Liberal statement!!!

No one has ever accused me of being a liberal, but I never got the appeal of Harvey either. I just found his "news" to be way too hokey (though I did enjoy is rrrrrrrrest of the story segments).

But he was a lot less nasty in his comments about those with whom he disagreed than the fanatics on both sides who darken radio and TV today.

Can't argue with that statement. We could use a lot more civility today. Just because you disagree with someone doesn't make you (or them) an idiot.

Bite me. I just think that his selling things like $200 heaters to folks, knowing that they trusted him, was terrible. He knew that heater didn't put out any more eat than the $20 one, he was just in it for the money. In other words, he was a liar and a cheat.

But you're probably cool with prezbo selling a health care bill to us with lies and distortions that we have no choice in purchasing and are strangled by for life. Don't know about this heater that has you offended, but you didn't have to buy it.
