Jim,
We bought 80 new Dells all at the same time at work. In the last 2 years, 8-10 new HD's and so far 40+ MB's. All of the motherboards look the same when we open the case up.......swollen caps. Dell was aware long ago that the low bidder for the manufacturer of the boards used cheap parts and now they are all failing. When we call, thank goodness for warranties, they send a tech out with a MB, knowing what the problem is. 10 mins and it is up and running again.

That's correct. Network Interface Card (NIC). I would certainly try that before I went to alot of other expense. A good NIC is less than $10 and is easy to install. If you have onboard video, I'm sure you have an onboard NIC. Just disable the onboard NIC in the BIOS and connect to your network with the new one. I'm betting that's where your problem lies. I've seen bad onboard NIC's cause a whole lot of heartburn before being isolated. When I see symptoms of an MB issue (like you're seeing) on a machine with an onboard NIC, I start there now then move to the power supply and video card. Based on all the tech bulletins I can find, your errors point to the NIC.

If I understand correctly, you upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP, then tried to reinstall software that had originally been running fine under Win2000 and got lock ups. That wouldn't be a surprise if you didn't also upgrade the application software to run under WinXP.

Some applications that would work fine under Win2000 and even WinXp original will not work properly with WinXp Service Pack 2, and lock ups seem like a feasible result.

I would check the web sites of all the applications to see if updates have been issued. You might find your solution there.

You should also check to see if updated drivers are required for any of the hardware, especially the mobo components and video card.

OK---is this a self-evident process once I enter the BIOS, or am I going where I can do myself as much harm as good?

Snowridge, the software is all listed as compatible with XP Pro. In fact, I was already running Office XP with 2000, reinstalled that Office, Quickbooks Pro 2005, Front Page 2002, Nero Express. Nothing radical as I understand it.

I haven't read the whole thread but here is what I'd do. Make sure you have the latest drivers for ALL your devices for new OS.

As a side note...has your disk been defragged lately?
Do you have a temp monitor on the CPU, motherboard etc? IF so check that its not above what is normal for that CPU. Make sure you case fans etc are working ok. Check the fan on the CPU as well.

If you still have problems then run diags on your memory, there are free utilities to do this if you don't have one.

Unplug all the new devices that were installed and see if it still locks up. Depending on the result either remove another device or add ONE back in again. Its a process of elimination, basic trouble shooting 101.

Hope this helps.

Shut everything down, remove then reinstall every circuit card, power cable and buss cable, makeing sure everything is tight. I've seen PC's lockup and give error codes because of these components being loose.

You said that you've already wiped out the operaing system and reloaded, correct?

What you want to do if you haven't is to reformat the C drive 1st then reload the new XP operating system. Even though XP wipes as it loads, I've personally had better luck with doing a manual reformat 1st then allowing the new operating system load onto a "clean" disk.

Once you've got XP loaded up and working properly, i.e. you've got your internet going and you've downloaded all the latest fix's and updates from microsoft.com then I'd start loading the custom software one at time.

I've worked on PC based voicemail systems since their original introduction on 286 machines runiing MSDOS 2.1 to the newer DELL machines running WIN2000 Server. In between I've worked on machines with other operating systems such OS2, OS2 Warp, WINDOS and other proprietary operating systems and these basic PC machines run 24-7 356 for years on end without haveing to replace a P/S or HD every few years......

I've seen P/S's and HD's go 6 -8 yrs without any problems. Generally keeping power surges and lightning out of them is the key to longevity.

Over time the changes in temps and the build up of heat insulting dust can cause an I/O board to either overheat and breakdown or cause enough movement to allow some insulting material to get inbetween the edge connector and cinch connector. PCI cards seem to have more movement than the older IDE cards and SCSI cards used for tape backups and other accessories seem to be more suseptable to this also.

Generally a P/S either works or it doesn't. The only intermittent problem I've ever seen in power supply performance is when the cooling fan locks up and then the P/S overheats causing output voltage swings. A new fan and the P/S works good as new.

Good luck
Volfandt

How about the hardware? I also have an Athlon system, which is about the same vintage as yours. I had to upgrade the drivers for some of the MOBO's VIA made chips when I went to Service Pack 2. The tech that installed XP should have checked that sort of thing, but that doesn't mean he actually did.
