Pellet Stove Battery Backup

/ Pellet Stove Battery Backup #11
The Joachim storm in December took the power out for 2 days. The pellet furnace stopped and we had no heating during that time and no hot water on the second day. I'm tempted to acquire a generator to be able to run the furnace when the power is out. Not sure how much power would be needed, but rather on the tractor (JD 3520) than with one more gas engine. Any ideas ?

For some reason I wake up when the power goes out, I guess it is the total silence that awakens me! Plus I am sure I would hear the UPS beeping.

Looking into the Harmon manuals they do list a couple of "computer" UPS that are approved. These are just for shutting down the machine to avoid smoke in the house. Yes, this is what the manual says,

"Harman strongly recommends installing battery back-up to minimize entry of smoke into the
room in the event of power loss.

Your pellet/biomass burning appliance relies on a combustion blower to remove exhaust. A power failure will cause the combustion blower to stop. This may lead to exhaust seeping into the room. Vertical rise in the venting may provide natural draft. It is, however, no guarantee against leakage. "

My stove is a direct vent and I get some leakage. Don't think there is a problem, working as designed (maybe not a good design, but working).

The UPS I ordered should arrive today, so I'll be charging it up tonight. Rain, Sleet, and snow on the way tomorrow so it may get put to the test!

Worth looking into. How long will it keep it going and what is the cost?

I get no smoke from my pellet stove if shuts off from a power outage, but I have it on battery backup, the backup is a couple of 12 volt batts a cheap inverter, and a cheap battery charger. They will will run the stove for over 12 hours, and by then I will be up and notice that the power is out to the rest of the house. (I make coffee the first thing). I do however water the batterys every couple of months with distilled water.

The UPS is pretty good. According to the display I should get about an hour of runtime on the stove before the battery is out. That should be plenty of time to shut the stove down. The cost was about $200 from amazon. Not too bad.

This is the unit I purchased.
