There is no way I'd only burn 150gal per month If that were the case then yes you'd be correct. I'm not sure where the the "professionals" are coming up with 120 gal oil = 1 ton of pellets. For myself and others in this area that would be WAY off, I might believe 120= 1/2 ton?
Here is one site that even has a calculator to factor in your current utility prices and it will give you a Fuel Cost Comparison based on BTU's. This is not the only place that I have seen Wood Pellets listed as about 16.4 million BTU's per ton, Oil is approx 134,500 BTU's per gallon. So that means one ton of pellets is equal to about 122 gallons of oil (16,400,000 ÷ 134,500 = 121.933). Some resources list heating oil as 139,000 BTU's per gallon and other resources list Wood Pellets as only putting out 15.6 million BTU's per ton (7,800BTU's per lb). Using these numbers could result in even less then 120 gallons of oil per ton of pellets but the clear point is that it is no where near 2-300 gallons per ton.
