There is no way I'd only burn 150gal per month If that were the case then yes you'd be correct. I'm not sure where the the "professionals" are coming up with 120 gal oil = 1 ton of pellets. For myself and others in this area that would be WAY off, I might believe 120= 1/2 ton?

Here is one site that even has a calculator to factor in your current utility prices and it will give you a Fuel Cost Comparison based on BTU's. This is not the only place that I have seen Wood Pellets listed as about 16.4 million BTU's per ton, Oil is approx 134,500 BTU's per gallon. So that means one ton of pellets is equal to about 122 gallons of oil (16,400,000 ÷ 134,500 = 121.933). Some resources list heating oil as 139,000 BTU's per gallon and other resources list Wood Pellets as only putting out 15.6 million BTU's per ton (7,800BTU's per lb). Using these numbers could result in even less then 120 gallons of oil per ton of pellets but the clear point is that it is no where near 2-300 gallons per ton.

If you don't mind me asking was it a pellet stove or pellet furnace?

I believe that he was referring to a stove originally...A furnace is forced air, then the issue is just fuel source, not ability to heat that square footage. I really don't think a stove can handle that in any reasonable manner.

I don't argue the fact of BTU's, but as the saying goes everything looks neat and tidy on paper, but in the real world things are different. I can Honestly tell you I was burning 300+gal per month of oil in our trailer. When I went to a large pellet stove I only used a ton per month. Maybe I used less pellets because of continuous heat??? compared to a blast of hot then nothing then a blast then nothing. Using your prices, that still comes to $801 for oil monthly heat and $300 for pellet monthly heat. I'm not saying your wrong just telling facts based on my PERSONAL use. My usage was also very close to the same for the short time I had an oil furnace in our new house. I have also talked with the neighbors and a local pub that have switched over to pellet heat. Their savings are atleast in half, if not more. Most folks I have talked with about their pellet stoves have NO regrets. Those that did from what I've found out either bought to small, had bad placement, bad fuel, or just simply didn't like the cleanup/work involved. I'm sorry your stove didn't work out for you, I quess sometimes that's just how the ball bounces

I agree that is why I asked. A salamander is, atleast from what I've seen, probably the fastest and best way to heat a garage.
