cleaning of ash once yearly

This I would have to say is highly subjective. I have a quadrafire 1200i which is a fireplace insert. The clearance from the bottom of the firepot to the ashtray is minimal and the ash tray only collects what comes out of the firepot. Last year I had a few tons of crappy pellets and had to clean crap out of the firepot TWICE A DAY. What a pain in the ***. I actually had to put a glove on and reach my fingers up into the firepot to break up the crap in there. Mainly because the chunk was so big it out hit the bottom of the ash tray before clearing the bottom of the firepot. Of course the stove has to be shut down, cool a bit etc.

I had noticed these pellets had a pretty dark color, my next few tons were Firemaster out of Canada and colored like a clean pine board. They burned awesome but put a lot more ash up in fire area and nothing in the firepot. Either way I generally have to vacuum out the upper portion of my stove (where the fire is) once a week or so.

Some stoves have a huge ash tray that likely everything drops into, something I will be looking for if I buy another in the future. In my particular situation I did not have a lot of choice as I needed an insert with a high btu output.
