Penetrating Oils....best and home made...

I mixed up a small amount of ATF / acetone this evening to try on some manifold bolts on the old Ford tractor. The first thing I noticed was the two liquids didn't mix. As soon as I stopped stirring or shaking the mix, the two separated into layers. Bathed the bolts good anyway. I'll try to loosen them tomorrow or maybe give 'em another squirt and try Saturday.

Best stuff out of a can in my experience has been Kroil.

Havent tried the Atf mix but i will someday. It looks interesting.

I have to agree with this. Kroil is an amazing fluid and I bought a gallon of it years ago and have about 1/2 still left......

would liked to have seen ZEP 45 in the test as I have had great success with it.
Kroil is great too, Ive used Kano and Sili both.
They arent readily available at walmart or autozone, but old school parts stores usually stock one or the other. Its higher priced but well worth it.

Back on 8/7 I posted that I'd started to soak the muffler bolts on the Ford 1210. I know I had the muffler off to repaint the tractor in 2002 or 2003 and the bolts haven't been disturbed since. For some of the time since then it was in my Mom-in-law's barn but it has spent a lot of time outside. The muffler leaks badly and needs replaced.

I picked up an old-fashioned oil can for the acetone/Dextron mix. I wanted to avoid seals, O-rings, etc because of possibly damaging them. Since 8/7 I've squirted the bolts a few times and tonight I took a 13mm combination wrench to them. To my delight all 4 bolts backed out.

acetone / atf oil mix. sounds fairly intresting to me. i run across bolts / nuts every now and then. were manufacture or some yee haw, decided to just open up the can of spray paint, and go crazy over everything. including threads and all. that eating paint part is like *WOWZERS*! if it eats paint in those situations.

I had a lot of hole drilling to do in some thick steel bar. I mixed up some of the ATF -acetone and it worked just as good as any high dollar cutting oil ive used.

I subcontracted for an aerospace company about ten or so years ago. We'd drill into steel support beams, columns and even into stainless steel with small bits. They gave us this green stuff from a tube that resembled grease gun tube. The product had the consistency of wax. What ever it was, that stuff was amazing. I assume it removed all the heat from drilling, as our small (9/64) bits would last all day until you forgot to prelubricate. Than you burn the bit up.

for removing rusted stuff the best thing have ever used was made by GM called "heat riser penitrant" pretty pricy but a can would last for years in my toolbox at the shop. i used it mostly when extracting broken exhaust manifold bolts on big blocks. dont miss those days at all!
i tried just about everything else i could find in a can, nothing worked like that stuff for me
