Kroil is widely used in the aviation community. good stuff. I also like PB Blaster on my farm equipment. Will have to try
The ATF/Acetone bit for a trial...

I worked almost 30 years in private aviation in Florida and never heard about it but have seen many an ap/ia use Marvel mystery oil in aircraft engines with low compression due to lead building up on valve stems and not allowing the valve to close completely ,they would pull the upper plugs and saturate the cylinders with it and let it soak over night early the next morning they would take a hard mallet and smack the top of the valve stem and the impact would slam the valve shut and remove the build up and raise the compression back to legal limits without pulling the jug ! They always hid the marvel oil and one day I asked why and was told it is illegal to have in the maintenance area because it was not approved by the FAA because marvel refused to disclose what was in it . They all agreed it was the only thing that worked but not approved !

Those who want to blend acetone need to know how incredibly flammable that stuff is. A tenderfoot alchemist mixing stuff in his garage could inadvertantly start a fire from the fumes. When I get any on a rag or paper towel I make sure it doesn't even come in the barn. Rag stays outside till trash pickup and no exceptions.

the way everyone is talking about it on here, I was assuming there was a local place. I was hoping anyway, I will still probably try it anyway though, even if I have to order it.

Years ago (10ish) Kroil was pretty much industrial only. In order to buy it from Kroil you had to have a business. In the states, I understand its not that hard to find now because they stopped being industrial only. Checking your local industrial supply houses would be a good start for something close.

Its still VERY hard to get up here. Shipping in a case (me and a buddy were going to split one because we both were familiar with just how good it was through a previous employer) was going to be insanely expensive due to brokerage and Hazmat. I think we figured almost $20 a can (for the old style small cans). Needless to say, we havent ordered. I still have a couple cans left. I guard them with my life! And only use it on the worst stuck things.

So this atf/acetone brew begs the questions : Is any particular type of ATF better? (there are many types out there). Which is best ? (clean, new atf, or used ATF). Does it even matter?

Any type of ATF. It's just that ATF is the thinnest oil most people have handy.

A bit off topic but an old time method was to use heat and wax. Heat a rusted nut and the melted wax would get drawn into the threads and break them loose.

Never heard of that of even tried it on nuts/bolts. BUT, that is a common method on removing pipe plugs from engine blocks. Like the three oil galley plugs above the cam bearings at the rear of the block. And it does work surprisingly well on those pipe fittings. Because the nature of pipe fittings forming a seal, other penetrants dont work very well.

Most of the gunsmith supply places sell Kroil. Try Brownells. It can also be ordered direct from Kanolabs. It is expensive but the oil, not the aerosol, can be used in a oil squirt bottle and just a drop or two will work and the can will last a long time, a gallon will last a lifetime at home.

He's not kidding about the one drop. I think that is all I have ever used on something stuck. If you buy a gallon, make a note in your will.

Makes sense. About 30-40 years ago I hears I heard that Ford Type F ATF was basically a 10 weight oil with antifoaming additives and red dye. The new stuff (Dex Vi and others) appears even lighter now (but same red dye).

I have a can of what you guys call Kroil. Its an orange can and the name on the can is actually AERO-KROIL. I got the can when i was a machinist back in the day. Have never seen it since on any store shelf. Yes this stuff is the king of all penetrating oils. Spray something at night come back in the morning and its like magic. I did have to use heat with it one time on the shock bolt that was frozen to the bushing on the shock. I didn't want to wait over night so i used heat, spray, and an 8 lb sledge but it worked.:cool2:

I have been using PB penetrating oil with pretty good success and forgot about Kroil until reading this thread. I'm going to keep my eye open for it and pick some up when I see it. Can you get it at Home Depot or Lowes?

I don't think I'm going to try the mixing it myself approach. Looks like there might be to many issues to deal with if I get it wrong. To me, it's not worth the effort to mess with it.

I love WD40 for cleaning. It gets nasty stuff off my hands better then anything else, and it's also great for getting glue off of glass. Really a great cleaner, but it leaves an oily film, so it has to be cleaned up with windex after using it to remove glues.
