First off, my family, friends, in-laws all have a great sence of humor and always are up for kidding and joking. Likewise, I need to expect it back. This one falls under one of my classic's and happened last weekend. Our county had it's fair last week and finished it off with a NPRA Rodeo on the weekend. My wife and I haven't been to an actual rodeo in years and recruited a bunch of neighbors, and family to go with us. My wife and I watched calf roping (individual) for a time and then she and one of the other ladies left for awhile. While she was gone, the event switched to team roping. For some reason, the horns on these calves were wrapped with some sort of padding where as in the individual roping event they weren't. When my wife returned, the thought hit me to tell my wife that the announcer had made a comment that they ran out of calves with horns so they had to use strap-on horns. She thought I was full of it until they next calf ran out with this padding on. She then professed to everyone in our group that they were using strap-on horns and couldn't figure how they stayed on so well. The look on everyones faces....classic. She didn't fall for the strap-on testicles bit when bull riding started though.

My only worry, paybacks a b*tch.

Your kidding right? /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif
If not, please explain and I'll have Muhammed delete this post and all others relating to this subject. Never speak another word of this to anyone. My userid will be changed to something else.

How 'bout the bulls' 'strap ons'?

pdxman,
I kid you not one bit. We use strap on horns all the time for roping both in practice and in rodeos. Unless you have mexican corrientes or longhorns you usually use strap ons. Just not enough cattle with horns not to use them. Plus your regular beef cattle the horns aren't strong enough to take the constant abuse of roping. What you saw may have been strap on horns or it may have been a horn wrap. This is a wrap put around the horns to protect the horns and the steers head. In team roping you rope the horns, in calf roping you rope the neck so no need for horns.

As far as the strap in bull riding that is what is called a flank strap. It's put around the flanks on an animal and all it does it make them buck harder. They will still buck without it just not as hard. If you're even in doubt on this take old sorrel out for a ride and cinch him up around the flanks instead of the belly and watch the rodeo begin! The flank strap though doesn't come anywhere near the testicles.

Thanks Cowboydoc. Remember, not a word to anyone. I never would have imagined that fake horns would be used in an actual rodeo. Based upon what you described though, these appear to have been the protective wrap which is what I perceived them to be. As far as the bulls go though, I was trying to also get my wife to believe that the bulls were wearing strap-on testicles. Not a strap, ON the testicles. I'll take your word though on the method used to enhance the bucking and won't test this myself. Thanks.

Remember...Not a word to anyone.
