Pest Of The Year - What's Buggin' You?

/ Pest Of The Year - What's Buggin' You? #31
I did notice that Japanese Beetles are back. I need to put up the traps. Those worked real well last year in controlling the beetles.

Ticks, flea and chiggers are BAD this year. Frontline is not working AT ALL. We had a discussion last year on TBN about Frontline not working

For some reason all of the Vets and farm supply stores in town carry Frontline but not Advantage. The wifey went to one of the big pet stores yesterday and they had NO flea and tick control on the shelves. None. Zip. Nadda. That tells me that the ticks and fleas are real bad all over our area.

We had hoped they long very cold winter would have knocked down the ticks, fleas and chiggers but that has not been the case. We have had a very wet spring and summer so far. We have been getting at least a half inch of rain every week. And usually 2 inches a week. At one point we had 7 inches of rain in 2-3 weeks. My guess is that this rain is really helping the ticks, chiggers, and fleas.

Dan

Start a Revolution against pet pests. It works! It's expensive, but so is paying for something that doesn't work. Ask your vet for a prescription.

Unfortunately they don't mention ticks. This is the first time the dog(s) have had flea problem since moving to the country. Ticks are always the problem. Right now the dog needs both tick and flea protection.

We have found grape sized swollen ticks on the floor. So much of Frontline working. This also happened a few years ago where Frontline was not killing the ticks.

The house has a finished concrete floor. Ticks and fleas are one reason why. There is no place for the ticks and fleas to hide and lay eggs like they would in carpet. By the way, Borax is a good flea killer if one does get fleas in the carpet.

We have put food grade diatomaceous earth on the dog to help with the fleas. It seems to work. BUT she is biting herself so much she has eaten the earth which I think has given her an upset stomach. So no more diatomaceous earth on the dog.

Dan, ask your vet. We use Revolution on our 5 cats. They stay in the garage at night and roam through our woods all day long. In the year and a half we have used Revolution, we have never seen a single flea or tick on our kitties. That's why my wife is willing to pay $12 per animal per month. It really works for cats and I don't know why it would be any different for dogs. I think you will be doing yourself a favor if you at least discuss it with your vet.

It does now -- the last stuff we bought mentions ticks -- we asked our vet about it last year when he gave it to us for our Lab. Ticks will still get on him but apparently the stuff kills them . It is expensive but easy to administer and works:thumbsup:

Earwigs. Thousands of them, everywhere. Not bad as pests go, high "ick" factor, but little actual damage. There are just too many of them. I had sandbags for our record rainfall that I hadn't gotten around to removing, and there must be 100 under each one. And everywhere else. I wish they ate puncture vines!

I either have lost my mind or they updated the website. :D

I just went back to the Revolution website and they do mention ticks. In some places.

We will have to see if the vets are carrying this stuff.

Our local website/chatlist has had quite a few discussions about how bad the ticks and fleas are this year and that Frontline tain't getting it done.

Ticks have always been bad here. And chiggers depending on the time of the year. Fleas are a new issue. If I walked without chemical protection the roughly 50 yards from our porch, across the yard and septic field I would come back with at least a dozen ticks. This time a year I would likely be covered in chiggers. And maybe fleas.

My wife is a vet asst. I will ask her again i cant keep it all straight, but revolution is good, but it is not 100% proven on heartworms so you really should use triheart or heart gaurd as well , or keep all receipts from a vet where you purchase it so that they will pay to treat for heartworms if infected. FRONTLINE is the worst on the market, her office dosent even sell it and hasent for years, which is why Lowes and TSC sell it now , it just has market share which is why folks still buy it. It is no good for ticks, there theory is that the formulation is old and resistant fleas etc. are developing ( i think its 20+yrs old???). Get advantage multi it works on worms (not tape) as well as fleas ticks etc. Tri heart is just as good as heartgaurd but should be cheaper per dose as they are the new one and trying to gain market share. Revolution is the best stuff avail. for cats.

Those of you wanting to save money, can do the petmeds thing but you need to have it faxed to your vet for signature from the company. Vets do not like this as there is a 100% markup on medicins. PETSHED.com is a site that will allow you to purshase all the restricted medications like advantage, revolution etc. It is cheaper than petmeds as well, it is like a 50% discount over a vets office. The way around it is that it is based in Austraila, and under austraila law there is no need for a prescription for it, which is basically what going to your vet is for it. The funny thing is that you have a transaction in (cant remember if you get the dollar or so currency transfer or its in US dollars) austrailia for the medication but your meds in my case were shipped out of NJ. Not sure if there is a wharehouse there that gets it or what, how that works but it came in a week or less. I used them befor the wife got her discount or worked at the vet, would use it again (no the medication is not out of date), but we get most our meds for free as the reps give all the workers samples so that they will recomend X after using it on thier own pet with success. Currently we have 18 month supply of flea meds for our one dog and even with 5 cats will only purchase once or twice a year and will do it under a special where you get a free dose for buying six. We also have 3 indoors cats and one inside outside so recently (untill the indoor outdoor) we did not put meds on them but like once or twice a season, now with the I/O cat we put on all as even though she is med. she can give them to un Med. cats in house. So we really use what the reps give us, there is a pill now that will control fleas all month cant remember the name but we use it on the dog in winter but advantage multi in summer for ticks.

If buying we buy advantage.

Also something to keep in mind when buying from like petshed for heartworms if your dog comes down with it they may not pay for the treatment (under the gaurenntee) b/c it was not purchased from a vet in the US and you do not have the records to show that (just your recipt offline). Some companies dont like the online stuff. We use stuff that we can prove as the stuff is not 100% and your vet needs to do a heartworm test before starting a heart worm pill and then yearly to prove that the dog got them while taking, and then you need to keep the receipt or have records availible on the vet computer showing the purchase to prove you bought it every month or 6 every 6 months etc.

Oh right now, cant remember the brand, advantage for cats i think, but if you buy 6 you get 2 free, this is not just at my wifes work should be company wide, but it could be a region thing. Check with your vet and see but these specials are run by most of the med compaines several times a year for like a month, but usually its just 1 free.

Sorry for the long post i got going!!

Every year it's something. Part of rural life. Last year we had tent caterpillars that were insane. We taped the trees. It works very well. The drop down because of the heat of the day, but re-climb the tree in the afternoon to de-foliate by night. This year? Almost absent, although they'd moved 30 miles north and are eating everything they can.

This year? The award goes to the what some are calling Japanese Beetles, but I think they are more akin to the Rose Chafer. In any case, we are inundated. I have sprayed soapy water, which works wonderfully, but with the recent rains, it has to be re-applied. These guys are voracious and have swarmed like nothing I've seen in awhile.

So, what's your Pest Of The Year nomination?

Pics look familiar BP...
