Aroostook couple gets permit to keep pet wallaby, with conditions | Sun Journal

This story made me wonder if our friends from Down Under or others know if wallabies are common pets? Can a wallaby tolerate cold weather?

They're not common as captive pets over here. I'm pretty sure you need a special license to keep them, and thats generally only provided to someone who's rescuing them from road accidents etc, or who have a private zoo license of some kind. (Same deal for koalas). There are many varieties of kangaroos and wallabies. Wallabies are generally smaller. Some types certainly live in areas that are very cold in Winter, although our winters are usually shorter and milder than yours.

Thanks. I get the idea they are somewhat tamable, maybe like a de-scented skunk here. I just wondered, beyond the novelty perhaps, what the attraction might be.

Aroostook County, Maine (popularly known as The County) has long and cold winters and is known for the area snowmobiling and growing potatoes. I guess a pet wallaby is going to be in the house or warmed wallaby shed at least 3-4 months a year.

I don't know why the Fish & Game Dept. insists on neutering unless they don't want people going into the business of breeding them for sale. I doubt wallabies would fare well here in the wild if they escaped. Maybe they are concerned about non-native diseases and parasites that could be introduced and spread to native animals.

They tend to be pretty strict on that. They made a big deal about the koi fish in a restaurant aquarium tank a couple years back. Koi could interfere with native fish in some lakes I suppose.

As Alchemysa said you need a permit from our Parks and Wildlife service to keep native fauna , they are easily tamed and very people friendly when tame , that said they can do a lot of damage if provoked as they have huge claws on the hind feet , they raise themselves on their tail and lash out with their feet and that claw can rip open a human no problems
The other problem we are currently having with our Wallabies is they get beaten easily by the All Blacks (Aussie joke)
Wallabies are they Australian rugby union team
All Blacks are the New Zealand team
Last game we got done 22/0

Hmmm. Everybody needs one of those around the house. Doesn't sound like they are the perfect pet for everybody, but then what is?

Sorry about your rugby team score.

Yes sound perfect with the kids as in children. It'd be even better if it turned out the thrived in the wild.

We were in far north QSD in 97 when the my 2 boys were 13 and 15. Came across a group of rock wallabies, and they took trail mix right out of their hands. Not sure that I would want to have one as a pet, as they poo all over but it was pellets like a rabbit, or deer. And even the small ones have some claws.
