Pex Clamp/Ring Question

   / Pex Clamp/Ring Question #11
You can use a 5/16 width hose clamp. The problem is the high pressure point discontinuity under the worm gear tightener. This must be blended in some way to get even, leakproof clamping. I have good luck using ~ 10 to 20 wraps of 1/2" teflon tape under the clamp. - - Teflon has an interesting "cold flow" characteristic that favors flow away from extreme pressure locations. It self adjusts toward an even clamp force. Tighten the clamp gently repeatedly for an hour or so til it stabilizes.
Good point.

Or get one of the styles of clamp that are continuous under the screw. Personally, I have had too many issues with "standard" screw hose clamps.

All the best, Peter

The continuous type are great if you have the option of separating and remaking the joint. Not so much when you have to open up a small clamp to put around an unbroken line.
- A little work on the worm screw hose clamps pays off in sensitive situations; de burr the overlap tang, lube the mechanism (Militec is best) so side thrust tightening the band is limited. Before assembling preform the clamp to the subject diameter by tightening on a mandrel once or twice, minimize excessive band length and curl the end to easily enter the screw. The "rigid" region comprising the mechanism will hold the appropriate curve pretty well when you have to open up the clamp to get it around the tube.
