Since I'm in a posting mood I thought I would get your opinions on post hole digger. I will be putting in a new deck behind our house this fall and will need to put in the concrete footers. I'll probably buy those tubes and stick down 24" or whatever the frost line is. This will be in TN clay and don't want to do it with a manual digger. Probably no more than 10 holes total. I realise I could rent a gas power 1 or 2 man phd but thought a 3 pt would be better (means less work). Does anyone have a recommendation for the 2210?

I don't know anything about post hole diggers, but I am in awe of your decision to buy an expensive new toy...err, implement for which you have only two hours of work projected.

Yes it will be only a couple of hours, if that with the tractor but might take days with a shovel. I put in some steps up the slope for our pool and had to use a pick axe to break up the clay. This was before I had a 2210 otherwise I might have made 49" wide steps. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You in the Freehold area of NJ where all the horses are? We have some friends there that have horses and have overseen some shows at the Horse Park. They did that thing, driving I think it's called, where you have a carriage that is decorated like a tailor or other craft and is judged. Please excuse my ignorance on this subject. Back to tractors...

Live 2 miles from the horse park on the same road. I have the 9" auger. For $485.00 it's the best auger on the market that fits a 2210. You can buy other brands and the price jumps $300 - $400, but for someone that don't dig holes every day it's great. I've probably dug 450 - 500 holes with out problem.

I’ve used my father-in-laws Woods PHD to punch a bunch of holes in our Indiana clay for a fence and play ground equipment at our church. It’s a heavier version and has a 12 inch auger. Worked just fine, just have to make sure you don’t burry it too far or you may not be able to extract it from the hole. I did hit some buried trash (an old steel barrel) and had to use a large pipe wrench to screw it back out of the ground.
Overall it worked great. My 2210 had plenty of PTO power, just a little weak on rear hydraulics for extracting. I had punched 23 fence holes and ~30 play ground equipment holes to a depth of 24” with little issues. I’ve been surprised at how useful my in-law’s PHD has been. I’ve used it more than he has.

I've got the Speeco PHD from TSC for my 2210. It works just fine. I've never had a problem with it. I have the 9" auger. I was thinking about getting the 12" auger to do the footers for the deck too.
