I was really surprised today when my JD dealer suggested that my 2210 was not very capable for using a PHD. He said the hydraulics were good enough, but the lift power was questionable and of course the ground clearance was iffy with an average auger, which I think is 42". Showed me a WorkSaver model 300 I think that takes 30" auger bits but of course they want nearly $900 for it and even he admitted it is really light duty.

Some of you have talked about the SpeeCo at TSC, which I think can be had for about $650 with auger these days. I've seen it and it looks pretty good.

I also wondered if anyone has seen the cheap one at Northern Tool. My closest store is about an hour away and I haven't made it down there yet.

What do you think the 2210 can handle? (I don't have hundreds of holes to dig, but a couple of dozen every year seems average.)

Take a look at Gearmore Home they have the D20 post hole diggers that will take a 34" long auger bit. This is the link to the diggers themselves. http://www.gearmore.com/pdf/Cat_P18_P22.pdf

This is the unit I sell on my 2210's and 2305 tractors. You will be able to put a 12" bit in the ground with it. I typically get $710 for this with a 9" bit.

Besides this option you could add a 260 backhoe and a Hydraulic auger for all your hole digging needs.

I'm pretty sure I have seen some posts here with someone hooking up a PHD to a 2305. Do a search cause there are pics too. If I find it I'll pass th e link along.

I've seen threads here about it but I can't get any consensus about whether a standard 42" is okay on this tractor. Some say it is, some say it's not.

I know with the 42 it would be close to the ground, but is that a big deal on primarily level ground?

Anybody actually used one on a 2210?

I'm tempted to look for a 30" and I think that would be enough for most of my needs but the Woods PHD25 is $950 and that SpeeCo 42" is still a lot cheaper...

That looks good but I can't find a local dealer in Va.

So you agree that it would be better to get a shorter auger?

I would think the shorter auger would be better for a 2210. I have a 2305 (essentially the same as a 2210) and the knocks on them are lack of position control and limited cat 1 3pth. The 'limited' part means a shorter lift height. Based on that alone, the shorter shaft would be easier to work with.

I tend to agree with that. Now to find one that's reasonably priced.

I don't know if I could get $900 past the "finance committee"...

I have a JD2305 and use a PHD. The only real difference is the auger length. Mine is 32" for the "auger" section not including the tube and coupling section. My only problem so far has been that the original drive shaft was too long and needed to be cut shorter. I paid $535 fro the complete PHD unit.

I hope to update this thread shortly...

Your quotation for the Wksaver 300 is very high. The price list
shows $575 List last year, and $129 List for a 9" shorty auger. Many
dealers have discounts, too.

Your tractor is not very tall and that IS an issue. Worksaver has
3 sizes of short augers and the heavier duty 500 PHD is about the same
price as the 300. I have owned the 500.

Maybe you should try one of the Leinbachs, like the 7200, with a short
auger. The Leinbachs are quite cheap.
