Picked up a 1970 GMC C3500 dump truck that needs some TLC

That truck is just an old piece of junk and should be scrapped ,the engine is junk too and you would be better off just getting rid of it ! Fuel injected or carb? These motors had tiny cams and also were a bit on the lean side. The 86 305 in the GMC I rebuilt had similar issues. I think it was 88 they went to the tbi.

It was a TBI. We did not know anything so we used to take the air filter out on the highways fo more power. It was my buddies dads brand new truck. It was maybe a year old. He would have killed us if he would have found out. We were dumb High School kids. Lol

The tbi motor ran forever but lacked power. The 305 made 160hp or so, the 350 made 200. I helped a friend with a 90 model reg cab 305 and auto wake it up. We installed a 3" single exhaust, hypertech chip, cooler tstat and open element filter. We installed a bm shift kit and put 3.73 gears in the rear in place of 3.08 gears. The truck ran 15.8 in the 1/4. He drove it to 200k miles and sold it. 15.8 is not fast but for what we were working with not bad. Tbi is reliable but its poor fuel delivery design hampered making any real power. His older sister had a 92 Z28 with the tpi 305. Not sure what it did in the 1/4 but did have it to 135mph a couple times. That motor made 225-235 stock I believe.
