Pickup Truck Dilemma, Fix Old or Buy New?

Most MAF's can be cleaned with alchohol. Especially if you use a foam air filter. Its not a bad idea to clean them often if you use any type of oiled filter. Most do not need to be replaced.

berrymans B 12 works great. enough pressure out of can to push the particles off the sensor and dries quick.

To the O/P, we can talk and talk about this ses light but until you get some sort of diag on it we are all just doing something up a rope, lol.

I think several people missed the post where I have diagnosed this as a bad transmission output speed sensor.

Buckle, I saw that but ain't belivin it... No offense.. Okidokers?

same experience suggests that more often than not, it will be the mass airflow sensor (MAF)

Just an FYI for Dougster, the MAF was replaced about a year ago. I sure hope it doesn't need replacing again already.

8 or 9 years ago, the check engine light came on in my Ranger pickup. I took it to the dealer who diagnosed it and told me that the light was on because one cylinder misfired one time. He charged $200.

I asked him why the fool light didn't say "go to dealer and pay $200"?

He didn't see the humor, but I picked up a code reader on the way home & never looked back.

These days you can get an adequate one for $40.

Buckle, I don't believe you mentioned that before.... but regardless, I urge caution depending on tha results of and Autozone test... there are various grades of testers and they use the cheap ones... it's been my experience that they invaribl point to the oxy. sensor... trouble is, those things can be pricy and there are more than one on most vehicles.. Okidokers?

No problem. I'm just simply stating that in my case their scan did not point to the oxygen sensor and since it did point to a very inexpensive part I'm going to replace that before going to a dealer. For me, the trouble is almost the time out of my day to take it in as much as the cost to scan it.

Auto zone will read the code, but diag can be more complicated.

Yep. Case in point. My daughter took their car to Autozone and it read out a bad O2 sensor. Her husband replaced it and had the same problem. They took it to the dealer and they replaced the fuel pump. Runs fine now.

The speed sensor is located in the overdrive gear case. The sensor is positioned over the park gear and monitors transmission output shaft rotating speed. Speed sensor signals are triggered by the park gear lugs as they rotate past the sensor pickup face. Input signals from the sensor are sent to the transmission control module for processing. The vehicle speed sensor also serves as a backup for the transmission speed sensor. Signals from this sensor are shared with the powertrain control module.

now do we have a voltage problem, a mechanical problem, or just a bad sensor? check for fluid violation in the connector, this wouldbe a bad sensor. check the ground circuit , see top pic.

code readers read codes its the diag of this code thats the tricky part.
why would this set an ses light? due to possible trans concern that may cause an increse in fuel usage and incresed unburned fuel in the air.

back in 92 ses lights were just for emissions, no days they tell us alot more than "hey dude your runnin rich"

so what did you get for 200.00? Im thinking a little more than just a code read, 8-9 years ago i doubt the labor rate was 200.00 an hour.
