If the truck is an automatic, that year was know for problems with the valve bodies in the trany.
Throwing a plow on it may just fry the tranny.
Keep that in mind, a plow throws considerable abuse on a transmission.

Oh trust me I know. I have plowed with class 8 highway plow trucks and can tell you I'm not crazy about a plow on a half ton truck. I love a plow on a 3/4 ton truck over anything else.

I have been trying to talk him into a 4wd cut tractor for years. The driveway is 1/4 mile long and plowing snow is not the only task the tractor could be used for.

The transmission fluid has been changed on its schedules and the truck has 150,000 miles on it. I completely agree that plowing snow will shorten any trucks life and the transmissions life.

I had a 91 gmc k-1500 and plowed snow with it for it's life time which ended last year. I kept it just for a plow truck for the last 5. It had a Fisher 7.5 blade, of course it was the old system where the frame stayed on the plow. I replaced the truck with a 2008 gmc extra cab 4wd and the plow with another Fisher last year SD model. bought the fisher based upon my good experience and others. I feel as though the sd is to light. DOT reg won't allow an HD blade and I couldn't get anybody to sell me one, even if I did the install. I actually took some old weights and ran a chain across the back of the blade and hung them from it. It also came a with a ploy cutting edge. Now that edge has worn in it cuts a lot better. When it is done I'll replace it with steel. As far a the truck goes I plowed based upon the snow: light and fluffy 4wd high in low gear, if it was wet and heavy 4wd low , in low. If we had a lot of snow the winter I would change out the tranny fluid in the spring, When It was a plow truck I never did, Plow with the storm if possible and the 1/2 ton should work fine,There were times when the snow got real heavy and wet and I would have to take a run at, but even with the 3/4 you will have that problem. When a real bad storm was forecast with heavy wet snow I put on a set of chains. I have A b7610 open air and I plow with the truck heater on etc. and push back with the tractor. Been a lot of snow this year have been exploring a snowblower (running out of places to push the snow)for it but price came in at around same money as plow 4200.00 I plowed on both gravel and asphalt, make sure you get a trip edge.

About your snow;

What would happen if you and your father co owned a larger USED
row crop 4WD tractor +- 70 horsepower in good shape with a heated
cabin and invested in a new rear snow blower(lets say a seven footer?

The other question is could you have a longer chute built for the
snow caster to keep the snow further up and away from the ground
to help reduce the blowback to a minimum?

The Berco soft cabs might be what you are looking for too.

Leonz has got good suggestions. I have a 75hp tractor w/cab + 7 1/2 blower. You can clear some snow in comfort. The 1/4 mile drive that you have will be **** on that 1/2 ton. You know that already.

As I sated in an earlier post, I have plowed with a half ton for years. but if you get a lot of snow the blower would be the way to go. Once those bankings are set it can be a b***h if you have a lot of snow, especially with the length of drive you have to clear.

And I don't have a lot of faith in the 1/2 ton tranny plowing a 1/4 mile drive. If you do stay on 4 low, which I'm sure you do, but that length of drive it would be very tempting to go to high range.

yeah , but it probably won't be much faster in a tractor with a blower.

in my opinion you're correct.I've seen guys talk about how fast they can cover ground with a plow versus a snow blower. But as winter goes on it takes me the same amount of time Snowbowl my 600 its foot driveway is it didn't beginning of the winter. Where is when I had to pick up on the plow it always took longer
