South and East of where I live is called the Palouse. Its world famous for wheat and was originally homesteaded by folks of German ancestry. There are three barns like this, that I know of, in this area. I ride by at least one of them every time I go south.

We have a round barn locally too...

Certainly not up to the standards (or size) of many of the classic barns in this thread, but here's what I built for my needs. Quickly too, as I found out in June that my off-site hay storage was being sold and I'd need to have my own ready by August.

Our barn is perched on a hill about 60' above a river.




The barn was built about 8 years ago. It's a post/steel Morton building.




Inside the barn there is an entertainment loft where we have bbqs/parties.




Last Winter we were pretty frustrated at the inability to use the barn due to the cold, so this Summer we decided to spray foam the entire barn (R25 on walls, R30 on ceiling) finish the inside with clear-coated pine and acoustic steel (to reduce echo).




Hopefully this Winter we'll really get some good use out of it - I'm most looking forward to not having to winterize everything!

Both of your round barns look just like the ones around here - only yours are bigger & newer or restored. Unfortunately - those in my area are apparently not used much anymore and are slowly wasting away. Actually, as I think about it, I think one of the round ones has been put on the "historic register" list and will be going thru restoration one of these days.

There must have been some advantage to a round barn that no longer exists.

That's a thing of beauty ! How did you get the (winter) photo from above ? Using a drone or something like that ?

This barn was built about 1921 by my grandfather with the shed addition much later of course.

A mini-twister lifted the top section off the barn and placed it where you see it, rotated about 270 degrees and in a pile. That roof was not moved after the storm before this picture.
You can see the sad disposal operation /fire here with the replacement red/white building in the background. Not much to look at but every farm has its' story.

Here is a picture of mine, not nearly as ideas some of the older ones shown so far but it keeps my equipment dry. I have a special place for old barns and would live to own one someday.
