Does anyone here have a shooting range on his back yard? If so, I'd love to see pictures, hear stories, read advice, etc. I tackled step one of this project, and that was buy-in from my wife. So, step two is to start absorbing experiences or wish-I'd-thought-ofs that anyone else may have to share.

The area that I have in mind will only be suitable for pistols. Rifles are out of the question with the shape of my ground.

Thanks

OK, I have and bank and generally rising terrain behind my location and I use it for both pistols and rifles, but you did ask for pictures!:cool2:

yes we do have range for both hand guns and rifles on our property,30ft- 25yds-50yds 100yd, 200yds. 4x4 post set in ground 4'x6' frame work plywood for backing which to attach targets we also hang old bowling pins with chain on closer targets for fun. our site has a good back drop, also we dump a dump truck load of saw dust/shaving behind targets also to elimanate flier's in case of stone hit's. don't forget a shooting bench after trying many benches we finaly made one with old light poles in the ground then poured 3 inch concete top on it. there is no shaking to this. Good luck

Thanks y'all. I started excavating out an area this weekend. It'll be real small, only about 20 yards, but it'll suffice for those times that I can't make it to a "real" range.

Thank you, Iowachild, for the picture. I was pondering different options for dealing with rocks in my backstop, and I like the wood idea, especially since I have endless piles of old wood that I don't know what to do with.

My uncle has the perfect spot. His acreage has an old railroad bed running through it and a good bit of that was below grade (cut into his rolling hills). Long, straight, flat and sidewalls of dirt, then going into a curve so backstop too. Can't beat that.

I'm lucky in this regard. I can shoot right off my back deck safely. My lot has a nice gully in the back and much of the land behind the lot is thick with brush. Nothing more convenient than stepping out the back door, setting up the spotting scope on the railing, and trying out the latest hand-loads! Good luck with your project.

Ditto Ditto  You really don't want to see a pic of my sturdy picnic table and chair.:D And you can clearly see the skunk's feelings of our back stop area in the hill side.

I wish I had a side view shot for you. It is 18" to 24" hemlock logs piled several rows back. A lot of what I did I learned from the range at the sport'sman club I belong to. Building a target holder with the major parts hopefully away from frequent shoots and the other parts cheap and easily replaced.
