I thought about that. I thought about the fact that the original 8N was a genuine working tractor and 20 hp then isn't what 20 hp is today... still.

Do the"real farmers" of which you speak want an 8N tribute? Hmmmm..

Would my original contention of a JD 3000 series or Kubota B series sized estate tractor have been perhaps a better target? Hey, it's just one man's opinion, but estate tractors just seemed like a better target audience for the tribute to me.

My father has an 8N which I've spent a lot of hrs on. When I saw last spring that they had made a modern version I couldn't wait to see one. Of course when I found out how big they were I wasn't quite as excited. I agree with you about wishing for a smaller version.

No pictures, but I do have this nifty little video! Huge, 125 year old plus oak that fell into the swamp down behind my place. Couldn't let it go to waste. Had to bush hog and fork a path to it. Whole project has been fun, but ADD is kicking in! Still gotta cut/split/stack the whole shebang.

Here I am working on the trusty 790:

For what it is worth, I grew up working on farms and when I was nine years old I was involved a very bad farm accident that was modeled after what I saw in some pics on this thread. A young friend and I were riding in the raised bucket of a full sized tractor while the father worked the field at a leisurely pace. The next thing we knew the bucket just dropped, we were head first on the ground and before he could stop, the front end of the tractor ran over me. It fractured my pelvis in three locations. I was in intensive care for a few days and then a couple more weeks in the hospital in traction. The pain of getting squished like a bug is bad enough--but having a pin drilled cross-ways straight through your leg bone while you are awake (to attach a traction device) produced a pain I remember to this day. Never mind the pain of later drawing the pin back out and then going through physical therapy to walk again.

I recovered and my family and I now work our own small homestead/farm. But I would never dream of doing a number of the things we did back in those days. It was sheer ignorance on all of our part and my accident was 100% avoidable.

Yes, and no. I do far more mowing than I do anything else. The action in this vid is a rarity, I'm just recovering some wood that fell on a neighbors property.

I thought long and hard on deciding whether to go R4 or turf, not wanting to damage the lawn I've worked so hard to bring back from a goldenrod patch. The R4's are a great compromise, not hurting the lawn if you are careful, yet can still perform in the clay slime we have around here.
