A friend and I received this cooker from a mutual friend whose dad and mom passed. He told us if we would restore it we could have it. It is the mother of all cookers......literally it is 40 years old! We have stripped the rust and old paint. Patched and repaired the holes and other things like handles etc. We still have to add the fire brick and reinstall the grates. I know there are much nicer and more elaborate cookers out there but we are pleased. We have less than $300 in it right now!

Used Rustoleum paint. We don't expect temps much above 300 and mostly around 225. We've been using one that had no name brand paint. It is still holding on. We can usually hold our hands on the top of the cooker for 5 to 8 seconds while we are cooking a pig. It usually takes 14 to 16 hours to cook a whole hog!

A pig slow cooked in one of these things is about one of the best things I have ever had. Would enjoy some pics of your first cook!

Whistlepig, we've been cooking whole hogs for the last three or four years using a borrowed cooker. Memorial Day might be our first big pig pickin'. Our church men's group is going to cook Boston butts for 4th of July. So there will b plenty of chances for pics of slow roasted pig.

I have a small smoker and have done some butts. A slow roasted whole pig is a lot of work but well worth it. As long as someone else is doing the work!

Some Barley Pop makes the work go easier and whets the appetite! It really is an art and a labor of love.

Do you stay with the cooker the entire time the pig is cooking?
