Yes, we cook with wood we have a burn barrel where we burn oak and hickory down to coals. We use a shovel to move the coals from the burn barrel to the cooker. You can see the doors in the ends of he cooker where we shovel the coals in. Depending on what we cook, we sometimes use charcoal.

Given all that, one of us is with the cooker the entire time. We have been known to work out shifts of four hours or so.

Yes, it's a lot of work and a lot of boring babysitting a hog cooker through the night, but as somebody said, it's a labor of love and the end results are worth the effort. Most people eating a slow cooked hog like that never really take into account how hard it was for someone to fix that particular dinner for them, but everyone always love the way they taste!
You can't beat one cooked over wood, though we have used charcoal a few times. Years ago we built a LP gas cooker but the meat just couldn't compare, so we only used it the one time, then ripped out all the burners and made it into a wood cooker.

Gunny, this one was rigged for LP gas when we got it. I've seen and heard about too many accidents with gas to want to keep it. I agree that wood is better than charcoal but in a pinch or on short notice, charcoal will be okay.

Cool stuff, do you have to rotate the tires as you're cooking? I'll bet your friend enjoys knowing that his parents' cooker is still in use and being well cared for.
