Our ball hitches, too, don't look so much different locked and unlocked. I always thought the ability to leave the pin in when it's unlocked was so you don't lose the pin (if the chain is missing). Still I agree it would be better if the appearance were radically different one way or t'other.
The excess instructions probably make for the less common sense - when you don't have to remember (or learn) stuff, you don't.
