Now I like autos, but I think a double-action revolver is MUCH safer for the beginner because is far easier to understand. The magazine and chambers are the same thing, and there is no safety (none needed). Open the wheel, you can see plainly if it is loaded or unloaded, and it is clear how to clean it.
With an auto, having the magazine unloaded does not mean that the gun is safe because there could still be a round in the chamber. Conversely, the magazine can be in and the chamber empty, but the gun is loaded. On top of that there is a safety to be switched on or off. Then there is the slide lockback function, and how to dissasemble for cleaning. The tragic results of confusion about all of these are found frequently on the evening newscast.
