Concur with Ranchman's thesis.
The attached picture is a Taurus Model 627 Tracker. Although you get get this one in Titanium, I perfer the heft of stainless steel for recoil absorption as well as corrosion resistance. The Tracker is also ported for recoil, but makes for a very loud gun.
Although I prefer a Glock...also prefer 9 mm...this is the house gun. Very comfortable gun to shoot, once you get used to the ribbed grips.
It's got quite a few rounds through it, but be advised Taurus quality can flucuate quite a bit. Best bet there is to put 200-300 rounds through a Taurus ASAP to prove it out. Their lifetime warranty is good and I've had great service with the two Taurus revolvers (not this one) I've had to send for repair.

One more consideration if you get the fever and like to shoot a lot, get you an ammo loader this can reduce the costs substantially. I shoot 45 ACP mostly and I can buy 500 lead bullets for $17 (yes I shoot lead mostly, not copper jacketed). I know, I know but I keep my barrel clean.
BTW.. I load my house pistol, the first 2 rounds are CCI rat shot. That way, my wife doesn't have to aim and I don't have to worry about the bullet going through the neighbors house too.

My new favorite large bore is my S&W 500 Magnum. It's literally a BLAST to shoot. I also have a DW 357 Maximum that is a good shooter too. I agree with everybody, I think the .357 cartridge pistol is the best all around gun. Attachment compares the 500 magnum to the 357 Maximum.

I'm sure you've tested your gun for function with the shot cartridges, but I thought I might let others know that in many cases, they won't cycle in a semi-auto pistol. It might have something to do with the weight of the shot charge being less than a bullet. If anyone else plans on using them for defense (something I personally wouldn't recommend) make sure they function in your pistol.

Now I like autos, but I think a double-action revolver is MUCH safer for the beginner because is far easier to understand. The magazine and chambers are the same thing, and there is no safety (none needed). Open the wheel, you can see plainly if it is loaded or unloaded, and it is clear how to clean it.
With an auto, having the magazine unloaded does not mean that the gun is safe because there could still be a round in the chamber. Conversely, the magazine can be in and the chamber empty, but the gun is loaded. On top of that there is a safety to be switched on or off. Then there is the slide lockback function, and how to dissasemble for cleaning. The tragic results of confusion about all of these are found frequently on the evening newscast.

I also prefer semi-auto pistols but agree that a revolver would be a better gun to start off with. Although I prefer to carry a semi-auto, I mostly carry a .38 revolver (it's a light-weight model).
The revolver will always fire...and even if it doesn't, a pull on the trigger cycles to the next round. That's not the case with a semi-auto...you've got the rack the slide manually.
The most important thing is to read the manual completely. Use a modicum of common sense and always be safety conscious!
