I would recommend combination of trees. Some fast growing such as birches and slow growing such as oak or linden (drought resistant)
The smaller oaks on the pictures are at least 100 years old. The big one are about 300 years old.

Check out some of the local town streets that have planted trees. Find one you like and use it as an example when doing yours.:)

I had the two red oaks in my front yard at my old house in Grand Prairie, TX. The soil there was black gumbo and the trees really liked it when I started watering my yard on a regular basis. They provided lots of shade for my house because it faced west. My neighbor across the street planted two shumard red oaks and they grew very fast to 12" caliper trees. Considering what you want, I'd plant the trees no more than 40' apart.

Im planning to plant some oat trees up both sides of my driveway some time in the next 2 months. Im in NE texas and was planning to plant red oaks. For those of you who have some experience with this, how far apart would you plant the trees? thanks

Have you considered Pin Oak trees they are fast growing compared to other oak trees and they do well in storms. The planting zones are from 4-8 so I dont know if they would fit in your area.

I plated a few acreas on our farm with hardwoods for the CREP program. The recommended spacing was in rows 12 feet apart, with the trees spaced 8 feet apart. When these trees begin to get some size on them, we will thin them. I know that's not the same as trying to line a driveway, but you can plant more closely and thin.

I'm guessing that with our help you have it figured out by now. And we were all glad to help you. So, as we suggested, just plant your trees some where between 8 and 100 foot apart and your trees will be just fine. ;)

I planted a row of native live oak 6' apart for screening...

Had a place with a live oak hedge that was great... never had to do anything except use the power trimmer...
