I just recently planted corn the first time ever and loved it. I was using a old JD and im not sure what the model was. I have a total of 4 acres I will plant and if I can find one here soon then I will plant the rest of my land. I only planted about 1.5 acres so far. I planted .75 acres in sweet corn and the rest in silage corn. I am doing this for wildlife/Hobby.

How much money can be made if I did all sweet corn and sold it on a road side stand. Like I say I知 in it for fun but the sweet corn can definitely burn a whole in my pocket as expensive as it is.

I like the idea of having a fertilizer box on the planter as well but it is not rill important cause I can just spread the firt with my regular spreader before I drag harrow the field.

Based off of what I have read on here, more people stand behind the JD 71 then any other planter. There are tons of ford 309 planters for sale around me and I just don稚 know weather to go with one of them or buy a jd 71 and drive 4 plus hours to pick it up. What do you think about this old international planter: 2 Row Corn Planter
What would you all do if you were in my shoes?

I don't recall the model # of the IH planters right off the top of my head, but they were essentially IH's version of the Deere 70/71 series. Decent planters even if they are IH.....

It's easy enough to build a liquid fertilizer system on a 71 planter, or install Gandy side dressers and use a Deere disc fertilizer opener. (for dry fert) They're easy to find. (Were used on 494/495 style planters) Best reason for a Deere planter is availability of OEM parts and availability of aftermarket parts....Others are good, Deere just happens to be great in that area.

The ONLY knock I have on the Ford 309 is it has runner openers. Disc openers are FAR more forgiving. (speed, rough field, ect) Good planters otherwise...

You are filled with knowledge on planters! I have a 4000-pound tractor. Do you think I can handle a 7000 series? If so that would be awesome if you could find out a way for me to get a hold of the guy in Kentucky you were talking about!

I hope thats not him because his prices are actualy rill high. That one is just a special because it doesnt have a drive gear so the seed spacing is 5.5 inches no matter what. It is also non adjustable on width. However would this planter fill my needs given that I am going to plant silage corn and sweet corn? I am not rilly sure about the seed spacing and it seems like I hurd that you need at least 40" rows for sweet corn?

Guys,

It says that it does not have a transmision and the seed placement is 5.5". I Will be planting about 3 acres of corn with it every year. My primary use would be for food plots but I would also like to plant about .5 acre of sweet corn with it. Will the 5.5" seed placment be to closs for sweet corn? If so how hard would it be for me to fabricate this planter to make the seed placment more? I would not need to adjust it. I would leave it set and use it on the same setting for both sweet and silage corn.

Your sweet corn ears will be just a little bit smaller with the 5.5 inch spacing but you will still be very happy with that planter for planting corn
