My question is should I disc or till?
I have a 6ft Tiller and a 6ft Disc,I do know I can run faster with disc but I can run pretty good with tiller also. Im planting tifton9 Bahia,I do also have a 12ft drag and roller, then a 3pt seeder and small 50lbs unit on my 4wheeler. I'll be running the 5040 and father-in-law has 40hp international will be using and hope some help shows up.

Use the disc and chain the drag to the back of the disc. Use the other tractor to till new ground at the same time. You'll get the most done this way.

Tilling that acrage will take a looooooong time. Maybe you should look into buying a plow.

I'd use the disc and drag and follow these instructions

Seeding Bahiagrass Pastures

I assume your seeders are broadcast type. Broadcasting and rolling will give probably 50-60% germination. A drop seeder/cultipacker unit like a Brillion would give better germination efficiency (~90%).

Good luck.

I can't imagine tilling 40 acres. I think I would be looking at spraying existing vegetation and renting a no till seed drill.

Good idea--spray, mow, seed with the no-till (assuming the OP can find a nearby rental place that has no-tills)

Here's what many do.

1st kill the vegetation by spraying it. Wait until everything dies. Some people do it a 2nd time in case any weed seeds try to sprout.

Hire out a BIG tractor and pull a heavy offset disc over it first. Pay attention to how well it digs in. I'm talking about a BIG disc that has 30" or bigger sized discs. If need be, have him go over it at a 90 degree angle the 2nd time at really hard packed areas.

Then get your disc out and smooth out the coarseness left by the offset.

Tilling is good, but if your soil is like mine, if I tilled mine, it would be so soft I couldn't drive a tractor on it for weeks, maybe 2 months, until it packed down enough.

A couple things to ask yourself ... how long has it been since the ground has been renovated? How rough is this 40 acres?

It may be as simple as Mark stated, spray and no till ... if the ground needs work then think about subsoiling and discing and then seeding ... with weed control.

I'm with the "plow then disc and cross disc" crowd. I personally would try to avoid having to use total grass killer unless it is a must, if for no reason than cost. Plowing the vegetation under should help loosen up the soil and put some free compost in the ground

I have already mowed it, it doesnt have alot to spray(yellow flowers),and no-till rental isnt in the budget(waiting line is to long anyways). I do own a 21ft-300gal.sprayer but was going to spray at a later date when goatweeds start to grow(I sprayed last year)...
