I am planning on trying some sunflowers and sorghum in the middle again. Last year was a total bust on the sunflowers due to lack of rain and the sorghum barely made it and only in the best soil.
I'm thinking of going ahead and leaving most of the wheat and oats standing to see what happens this summer. We do have plenty of dove around and I think that mowing and discing right before dove season sounds like a good idea. Depending on how many seed heads are left I can either spread some more seed or just lightly disc it in.
If you live around here it wouldn't really suprise you that there isn't a deer season in this county. Lubbock is over 200,000 people and most of the rural property is open cotton fields. There are just a couple spots with any Trees and cover for deer. Texas currently doesn't have any kind of drawing or limits on deer so if they opened up the county for hunting every deer in the county could potentially be shot the first year.
Believe me, if that nice whitetail comes back around next year it is going to be hard to pass him up!! Maybe I'll at least get some good pictures of him!
