Plastic drum for diesel fuel (venting it)

Guys,

Here is one possible source for the adapters:
http://www.ba-industrial.com/drumplug.htm

but they are overly pround of them in my opinion. I think I got three for $5 each, but can't remeber the source.

If you use the search term "buttress drum adapter" on hotbot.com you get over 200 hits. I bet one of those comapines has a reasonable price on these things.

Long ago I had a steel drum with waste oil in it. It also ended up with some gas in it as well. In the summer time I one time heard this loud poping sound. After some investigating I figured out that the drum was cooling down at night and the pressure inisde would drop and the drum would contract. During the day it would heat up and expand with a loud poping sound. No harm, but it made me nervous so I always use a vent.
These vent fill plugs are designed for pickup truck fuel tanks so I do not think you will have problems with moisture or pressure/vacuum.

The other resaon I like this setup is that I find that the plastic plugs in the drums tear up easily if you take them on and off alot. Eventually you need a new drum, which is cheap but cleaning them out properly can be a hassel.
The fill cap works similar to a gas cap on a car, so you never need to mess with the drum threads.

Also make sure you take the pump off when you transport it. Otherwise the pump swaying back and forth will eventually damage the bung threads.
