since blue cans are not everywhere - do you think its highly sought after item to sell from a low life ? if the red can looks full but its full of water do you think a thief that tries to use it become the sucker?

Heh. I was giving him the benefit of the doubt. He had to have some reason for it.
Maybe that's all they had (or the guy didn't know the difference)? For the price of a new "approved" gas can I'd empty them out and look for replacements. One can never have enough gas cans!

When I first starting reading this thread, my first reaction, He bought them to use as gas cans later since he seldom has any use for water cans. He likely figured they would be fine since they were brand new. They might be fine, they might not.. were they triple rinsed? My brother used to tell me that most of the chemical containers they used for spraying farm crops had triple rinse instructions... I would probably avoid drinking water from them or using it for cooking, but otherwise maybe ok.

He might get pushback if he tried to douse a campfire for the night with one... bad example for young kids.. but that is another story for another day.

Yes -- we have a well and have plenty of water. But it is loaded with Sulphur and is undrinkable. Working on better filtering system but its complicated -- primarily because we don't heat the cabin in the winter so the system might freeze. In any case, we just bring jugs of spring water or containers from home and get along ok.

Maybe because it doesn't run often. My test for quality has always been the dogs...if they won't drink it, I won't either.

At a gov't auction site I recently spotted red and yellow 5 gal plastic 'cans' clearly marked potable water.

If I were to use a typical (yellow or red) for potable water I'd be tempted to first add 1 gal clean water with a decent dosage of chlorine (javex) simply to assure there were no contaminants present as I'd imagine the manufacturers don't use the same cautions for gas as they'd use for potable water.

Probably explains the additional cost the ask for 'water' cans.

As others have stated, same plastic and same can just different color.

What makes a water can "food grade" vs a gas can has little to do with the material. And everything to do with the MFG process.

Its already been stated, but food grade mold releases, food grade greases in the machine itself, the manufacturing facility itself is held to a much higher cleanliness standard to be food grade, etc etc. Even warehousing and shipping of the containers. Things are over the top to maintain "food grade" standards

And for those that are concerned about cancer in lab rats in California, most "water cans" are BPA-free. Dont know about gas cans.

All of that said.....I wouldnt have any issues drinking water out of a new plastic can regardless of color.
