The industrial hoes are using plenty of plastic today and holding up very well. Todays plastic, it's good stuff.

Plastic fuel tanks do not rust and plug fuel lines.....

Deere uses "plastic"
New Holland uses "plastic"
Jinma uses "plastic"
(there may be others...)

No two are the same stuff.

All three have very satisfied owners.

Kubota uses "steel"
Kioti uses "steel"
LG uses "steel"
(there may be others...)

They might not be the same stuff (different alloys, grades, etc...)

I'll let all you whippersnappers fight this one out. I'm 56 years old, and either plastic or metal will out last me by at least 20 years. And I CERTAINLY don't want to pass a perfectly good tractor on to my kids! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm with you Blue, a year older to boot. If I outlive my tractor then I'm gonna be really old and even uglier.

It reminds me of the guy who was 60 years old and bought a 40 year roof. His goal was to outlive the roof. When it comes to tractors and such, the heck with posterity, leave that to the really important stuff like happiness. Happiness can be the search for the perfect tractor. I doubt 30 or 40 years from now the perfect tractor is going to be what we have now. I can envision a single wheeled tractor that can fly, but then, your vision may be a bit more extreme.

Grwoolf:

I haven't read all the posts here because your thread got long so I apologize if this is redundant. If I were you and couldn't put a structure up at all, I'd do the following:

Find a manufacturer of the newer "breathable" car covers like those I use for my Porsche's from Tweeks, Mid America Motor Works...etc. They protect against UV, are waterproof, breathe to allow moisture to escape and are designed to allow a very expensive automobile to exist outside in the elements. I'd simply work hard to find who manufactures this material and try to buy a 20 by 20 foot or 12 by 12 foot or whatever piece. Then I'd have the sides sewn, or have them sew them so they don't fray, and put grommets in myself with a $10 kit from Lowes. I'd park it, tie it tight, put stones on the edges, whatever. I'd think for a few hundred bucks you'd have a breathable durable cover that would last at least a couple years and prevent moisture buildup. Think how lucky you are compared to us up here in the Northeast where we might have three feet of snow sitting on the machine.

Although this is far from ideal it might be a solution. But I'm assuming a portable "car port" like from Cabelas is out of the question too according to your post? That would be my choice if you could do it.

If the tractor can fly why does it even need a single wheel?

I don't know, refueling purposes or maybe esthetics?

( disagree on the JB weld comment...you use the JB weld right and it is a strong as the original plastic...if not stronger )

My issue wasn't that the jbweld material wasn't stronger.. it is the union of the 2 broke joints and the jbweld. I'd bet that that union area wont hold up to the same punishment and be as flexible as the original undamaged part.

All I can say it is holding together fine for me......thats all I care....I won't lay awake at night wondering when it will break or if it will break....so far so good....and it looks like new.....after all it was a crack on the hood.
