Plate thickness for pintle hitch

No they're Metro bus shelters:D. Over the years I've made a lot of money off Metro. We put a Million tons of falsework iron in the Pioneer Square Station of the Metro bus tunnel. These H-beams are 311-pounds per foot.

I haven't got around to putting the plate on yet but I have been practicing with my new welder. I think it should hold fine.

That's right bdog; when in doubt, keep digging. You're gonna give one of these guys a stroke.

Haha - Had some fun with this. I am going to go with 3/4" but haven't got around to building it yet. We have been too busy moving dirt and building a 25 x 50 extension off the edge of our shop to park the dump trucks under. I forgot how much I hated concrete work. Got the piers and footer poured and dumped 18 tons of rock for the floor. Welded up the six vertical I-beams for the columns and going to try and put the I-beams across the top next week. That is going to be a challenge in it self because they need to go up higher than my loader lifts. I have some ideas though.

Separate project thread??? I hate it when you guys don't cut corners and do it right! :D I just spread a load of sand as a base for my new free standing fire pit. Was gonna just drop in place until I realized I didn't have a flat spot anywhere that made sense. Now I am into a little 150sqft paver job. Cut 2ft into grade and leveled. Why do all projects get bigger as soon as you start doing them?

You could always build one of these. Really helps when you need the extra reach. ;)

Well I made some progress today. I bought some 12" wide 3/4" strap for the pintle plate. They sold me a 9' piece for $160 which wasn't too bad. It took a while to remove everything off the back of the dump truck as it had a 1/8" plate going between the frame rails for the taillights and then for some reason had a 4" channel iron welded on the bottom of the frame between the two rails.

Still have a long way to go but here is the start.

The assembly will be all built on the shop table so I can do most the welds in easy positions. The pintle hook has 4 bolts that attach it and I plan to make one more triangle brace and center it between the four bolts and then maybe just for safety sake add some of the strong backs with some 4" x 1/2" strap I have laying around. Once built I will use a floor jack to put it in position and weld it to the bottom of the frame rails. Being that it is 12" wide and I can access the inside and out of the rails I can put 2' of welds on each side. I made the flat part 1.5" wider than the frame on each side and am going to run some more of the strap alongside the frame rails and weld it to the frame and the flat part so that the welds attaching it are not just on the bottom of the frame rail.

I only finished one weld today. I made a root pass with a 5P+ (6010) and then did about 6 more passes over it with the 7018 to fill up the gap. It is going to take a while but it should be plenty stout.

Made a little more progress today.

I am going to take some 3/4" plate and lay it on the outside of the frame rails and run it 18" or back and then weld it to the frame and to the pintle hitch assembly on the ledges sticking out past the frame so that I am not just relying on welds on to the bottom of the frame.

So far I have burned nearly 15 lbs of rods building this.
