Can you damage the clutch easily if you have to use it often to control the speed when snowblowing ?
I'm controlling the clutch so that the speed is slow when doing a run on each side of the 300' driveway, to prevent hitting posts.

Anytime the clutch is not completely in or completely out it is wearing.

Agreed. Never ride the clutch or slip it for more than a few seconds just to control your speed. All that slippage is being turned directly into physical wear and heat. Pick a different gear and/or a different throttle setting. A clutch should last many, many, many years but riding it like that will make it last only many many days

I wish someone would explain that to my wife.. Her last car was a 5 spd Escort (and her first manual transmission), she thought the clutch was the 'pause' tool - she was constantly riding it... Im surprised the clutch lasted the 100k miles that it did until we sold it..

If you need to ride the clutch, you're in too high a gear...drop one gear, see how it works for you...

She isn't the only one. When I worked at a MF dealer, it was amazing how many farmers there were that would rest their foot on the clutch. Of course, it was just enough to make the clutch wear. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: playing \"footsy\" with the clutch on 790

Ive heard this story...My granddad said back in the day folks would do the bad habit of using their clutch as a left foot resting post. Then theyd get an auto matic trans and they would do the same thing, or theyd brake with the left, and gas witht he right. He said this caused a lot of problems. Mechanical as well as accidents. Its best to keep tht clutch foot down unless you are shifting gears.

I can't use a different throttle setting. This would mean that the snowblower would not operate at it's full capacity.

The problem with the 790 is that there's only 2 speed for going backward. In the low gear, it would take hours. In the high gear, the speed is OK if there's no obstacles but too fast when I need to do the edge of the road, to prevent hitting posts.

That is a problem with the 790....reverse high is too fast for most applications. I suggest you jab the clutch, rather then slip it. If you keep your foot poised above the clutch and give it a push down as necessary..just ½ way so you don't slow the PTO.

Not any real good answers for your question, I'm afraid... This is one of the few times I think a hydro would be an advantage...or a power reverser transmission.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it next snow fall. Actually, now that I think of it, my driveway is large enough that I should not need to go so close to the posts. If I leave 6" of snow from them, I should be able to clear the road without playing with the clutch.
