Tractor
John Deere 790
I was wondering if any of you could offer up some ideas on what the problem could be. My freind I was talking to yesterday said he was having some proplems with a new to him tractor. I'm not sure what model or year John Deere tractor it is I will find out. I know it is around a 20 HP diesel approx 80's vintage.
After running it about an hour it just dies. If he lets it sit a few minutes it starts back up and runs fine. I guess this will repeat itself I don't know if the run time is shortened. He changed his fuel filter and nothing has changed.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to start trying to troubleshoot this?
I don't know much about diesels I have done most of my work on gas engines. I will get more info as needed.

Thank you.

Update: It is an 1983 JD 650 2cyl he thinks 18HP. This has happened three times. He also said it doesn't just shut down, it starts to lose power he then pushes in the clutch to keep it from stalling. He cleaned the fuel filter and it didn't help. He said he will change it as soon as he can get a new one. It also doesn't smoke or any other symptom other than lose power.

???????

Thank you.

They really aren't cleanable, he needs to put a new one on. If it is stoped up, there just isn't anyway of cleaning it, you can take the crud out of the bowl, but they won't help much.

I would say to check to see if there is some type of trash in the fuel tank plugging the outlet.

Check to see if there is a fine screen in the top side(metal) part of the sediment bowl. I am not familiar with the 650. I learned the hard way on a kobelco excavator--2 primary and 2 secondary fuel filters- $200. After checking sediment bowl for the tenth time a small round fine screen fell out that was completely plugged! Cleaned screen and it ran fine. Mike

I owned 650 for 18 yr. the same thing happen twice after getting some bad diesel. You need a new filter $6.75, you never clean the old filter. The 650 has 16hp 2 cyl diesel engine.

I will have him replace the filter and look for the screen. I think he meant he cleaned the bowl the filter sets in. He said he found it clean in the housing.

I don't know when he will get a chance to change the filter but, I will keep checking back here and read the post. I will follow up till it is cured.

Thanks for the ideas
