Scott, I asked the well folks about rebuilding it but they said it'd still be well over $500 and then there would be no warranty on it and the likelyhood of something else being wrong with the pump is pretty good plus it has almost 4 years on the parts so they recommend against it. It makes sense to me since I can't fix it by myself, if it were a shallow well and something I could pull by hand I'd sure give it a shot but at 650' I'm afraid I'd get in way over my head quick.

Steven, maybe the reason your pump costs so much is due to it's size given it has to pump up 650'. My well is around 245' dont recall the size of the pump. I can look up up tonight if you need. Like Scotty said, the well guys had a tool to help get the pump up. They had an old wheel rim welded to a bracket that clamped around the well head. After pulling the top of the well line up, laid it over the wheel, tied a rope to it and the other end to my tractor, and off I went.

Just more info for you, my well guy told me life expentancy of newer pumps is only about 5 yrs, as if they last any longer the mfgr isnt making much money. He was surprised my original pump lasted almost 15yrs.

jdgreg, I'm sure your right as the size and depth go up so does the price. My parents bought a lake house 40 years ago that a well had already been installed at and working for 10 years, they sold it last year and never spent a penny on the well and it was still going strong. I asked me well guys to sell me the very best indestructible pump they could sell me and a 5 year warranty is all they can find. I can bet in 5 years and a couple of weeks I'll be doing this again at an even higher price. Its sad that companies got to where they are at today by learning from history if they build it to well they'll never sell another one so they build in obsolescense and plastic parts where there should be metal knowing it will fail at some point and they can sell another one.

At 650' I would be surprized to see poly pipe used. At that depth we only see galvanized iron in big sticks and that's going to be heavy when full of water.

My well was finished about 2 weeks ago. The pump was set at the 710 foot depth, which was as far down as they could line the well with 4" PVC.

They used schedule 120 PVC pipe, threaded ends, with stainless couplers.

I had the work done by the best driller in the area (according to everyone I talked to).

I think a lot of your pump longevity issues may have to do with the quality of the pump installed. Our driller used a Flint and Walling pump, with a Franklin motor.

Being a complete newby to wells, I checked them on the internet and found that their reputation for quality was very high.
