With either 42.5 or 44 PTO hp you can certainly pull 2 bottoms but a 16" three bottom would be sort of close based on the comments I've heard. I own 2 3 bottom, probably 16", plows but have not used them. My NH has 80 pto hp so it should be fine. But I'd experiment with 3 if you have not already bought it.

I believe the measement is from front to back of the plow bottom, tip to end, but have honestly never done it.

With all the rain we're now getting (betw Richmond & C-ville, Va) I may try out one of those tools (and our tiller) to see if I can clean up some problem ground, may plant some rows as an experiment, with mainly hay and timber elsewhere.

NOPE!

Plow measurements are width of cut, measured side to side, beam to beam (Each bottom measured seperately).

Plows are meant to work at a depth of 1/2 measured width, + or - 1". (i'e. 12", 5" to 7"- 14" 6" to 8"- 16", 7" to 9" depth)

2X16", operating at max. depth will pull harder tha 3X12" at it's full depth of cut. (moving more dirt)

Growing up we pulled a 3 bottom-14" plow with our MF 245 (42 PTO HP) in any kind of soil. Certain hard ground could lug down the engine but overall it was a good size plow for that tractor. Prior to that, Dad pulled 2 x 12" bottoms with a CA-Allis Chalmers (26 PTO HP). I've always heard the rule of thumb was to multiply number of bottoms times the inch size of each bottom, and it would take a tractor with that much PTO HP to pull it.
. ex. 2 x 12" = minimum of 24 PTO HP to pull it.
I know the PTO has nothing to do with pulling a plow, but worked as a formula for a good rule of thumb.
For your 35 HP, I'd probably go with a 2 bottom plow of any size(12", 14" or 16"), because a 3-bottom may be too much.

A ford N will pull 2 bottoms 10-12-14 or a single 16 through most soils, Obviously concrete hard clay is going to be an issue as well as thickly rooted sod. A 35hp 4wd tractor should drag 2 14's thru most obstacles IMHO..

Good antique ford and dearborn plows go in the 100-200$ range.. new plows from tractor supply are inthe 500$ range..

Right, ran into a JD employee who straightened me out on that. You basically can measure from one plow bracket to the other. Sorry for the misinfo.

Wound up buying a JD415 14" meeasure from inside beams. The measurement is the Z strut between beams is 14" on it's offset. The plow had minimal use if any so it was in good shape. Hope to try it out soon. bjr
